The 60th Emmy awards are coming up on September 21st on ABC. While none of the Medium regulars were nominated, we can still watch to see whether the talented Anjelica Huston won an award for supporting actress. She did a great job on the six episodes she appeared in and certainly deserves the recognition.
In case you missed hearing about the nomination, I’ll do a quick re-cap. Patricia Arquette and Jake Weber both actually got as far as the semi-final rounds, but only Anjelica Huston was nominated. She was a shoe in with her great submission tape from Wicked Games part 2.

Oh, well, STILL no love for Medium or its performers. Anjelica Huston got beat by Cynthia Nixon for Guest Actress in a Drama Series.
Darnit!! I was SO hoping that she would win, and she should have. She really deserved that after her performance last season. Darnit! Oh, well, maybe next year. If not, there’s always the Golden Globes or the SAGs, right?
This is for a new thread….my “Beyond Rangoon” DVD review thread, as I ahve received and reviewed the DVD
Art films do not get the international release that ‘Beyond Rangoon” without first opening in the states to critical acclaim, especially back in 1995. ‘Beyond Rangoon” actually opened in many, many countries before the US as well. Plus, if you see the film, you can see it is no little “art” film. Do art films typically have large scale action sequences, car chases, and pay their lead actress $1 million?
Anyway, here is my DVD review…
Warner has done a wonderful job cleaning up this film, and making the colors bright and fresh. The colors are quite a bit brighter than the VHS and laserdisc releases. The anamorphic widescreen presentation is breathtaking. It is nice to see the entire film. The pan and scan VHS left a lot to be desired, and missing 1/2 of the picture certainly hurts this film.
The sound is clear, and Warner actually bumped up the music and effects from the previous laserdisc and VHS releases. I mean the music is more pronounced, and the surround sound 5.1 is used to great effect.
Warner also included some extras:
Theatrical Trailer: nice to see this included, however it could have been cleaned up a bit more. Besides that, great trailer. This also shows you the difference in colors, watching the actual film, and shows you how much Warner lightened and brightened the colors.
Beyond Rangoon: Truth has a Witness: nearly eight minutes of new interviews with Arquette and Boorman. Good insight, great info. Also see clips, old behind the scenes footage, as well as production photos. Nice to see as well.
The overall package design has changed from the prior releases, for the better. Warner does a solid job with animated chapter menus as well, using still photos and music.
I am assuming Warner will be releasing this in the US some time in the near future…..
I am currently working on screen captures from the film, and have made it through about 18 minutes of the film.
Once I am through, i will be somehow posting it to http://www.patricia-arquette.com, in the “Beyond Rangoon” movie images section.
This will take some time.
Hey, MWA, great review! Sounds like they did a great job with the transfer and packaging, and with the special features. I’m anxious to see the new interviews with Patricia Arquette and John Boorman and to hear what they have to say about the movie all these years later.
Where did you buy yours from? Which version did you get (Japanese or Italian)?
And why don’t you come to the forum at Patricia-Arquette.com anymore? We could use some more devoted fans over there.
Hey Dawn!
I am around, do not worry. My internet service at home is in limbo right now, but should be up and running in a few weeks.
Yes, Warner did a great job with the DVD, except of course releasing it in the states. Oh well, I am sure it will be out here in the next year or so, just because they did obviously spend some time cleaning up the film, having interviews, and putting together the retrospective, as well as totally new packaging. A lot of comapanies (Disney, for example), just use the exact same VHS packaging when releasing something on DVD.
I will also scan the cover and the back.
I got the japanese version from:
http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%83%A9%E3%83%B3%E3%82%B0%E3%83%BC%E3%83%B3%E3%82%92%E8%B6%8A%E3%81%88%E3%81%A6-%E3%82%B8%E3%83%A7%E3%83%B3%E3%83%BB%E3%83%96%E3%82%A2%E3%83%9E%E3%83%B3/dp/B001BWTVY2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1219679916&sr=1-1
It ended up costing me $46, but to me it was well worth it, and the shipping was 1/2 of the cost.
It also came via Fedex, and arrived 3 days after being sent from Japan. Not bad!
I can also scan the front and back cover. The artwork and packaging are great. The front has the title and Patricia’s name in English, and the rest is in Japanses, and the back is all Japanese except for the credits.
I am about 30 minutes into the film with screen caps, and am up to over 200 photos. Patricia is in every scene, the only movie she has been, so it makes for a lot of caps. There are going to be about 700 or so.
I will contribute soon Dawn, I promise!
Thanks for the tip, and the info, MWA. I just ordered mine.
Can’t wait to get it! I hope they follow with a US release soon.
Come by the forum and say Hi sometime.
Btw, MWA, is this dubbed in Japanese, or is it subtitled or what? Just curious. Looking forward to seeing your screencaps at P-A.com.
Don’t worry Dawn!
The film has a 5.1 surround sound track in English. Make sure to set the Audio options for English with NO subtitles.
Remember to also either own a region free dvd player or get a code online to unlock your region 1 lock, so you have a region free player to watch the film on. You can’t watch the movie otherwise.
I am also working ons creen caps, and am up to 35 minutes in the film, and am up to 250 caps so far.
I will post to the patricia arquette site when I am done, likely in less than a month…it takes a LONG time. I do a little a night. Patricia is in every darn scene. =)
I will also do caps for the extras and DVD setup, etc.
It is a good little project to have.
if you ordered from amazon. japan, it will ship via FedEx. Check your email and then track the package with Fedex online. You have to be home to sign for the package, or can schedule a pick up, etc.
I will contribute soon, I really will!
Thanks, MWA! Looking forward to it.
