Dr Phil House: Brat Camp Part 2

As a mother of three children, I’m horrified by episodes of Dr Phil where children are so badly behaved.  Today, it was the second episode in current “Dr Phil House” series.  Here is a list and description of the “brats:”

• Noah is 10 years old and he talks to his mother, Wendy, in a very disrespectful way.  He was suspended for hitting a principal.  when his 11-year-old sister died of brain cancer, he didn’t even cry.  He even slapped his mother in the face during last episode!!!
• Micah, 8, Kaitlyn, 8 and Andrew 12 are siblings and they are aggressive.  Even though there are five kids in the family, these are the only three with behavioural problems.
• Haley, 15, wants her mother to be less angry even though she doesn’t take care of all of the things her mother buys her.
• Ethan, 9, lies, cheats and steals and his mother said her divorce has been hard on him.

Today, Dr Phil had them begin with creating puppet shows.  The parent and and child did a role reversal when recreating a scene that really happened in their past.  It was interesting to see their difference of perspective when discussing the same exact event.

I am seeing an interesting pattern between Noah and Wendy.  Noah keeps asking her to admit that she has hit him hard in the past and she either refuses or changes the subject.  I am starting to believe him…  She seems to want to put all of the blame on Noah but doesn’t much talk about what she does wrong.  Dr Phil asked her straight out if she is abusing him (she said no and that he is lying) and he then asked them to ask each other for forgiveness for the hurt they’ve caused.  As soon as Dr Phil left, they got into another argument.  He was trying to talk about something and she shut him down.  He went out and vented to Haley and her mother and it was interesting because Haley learned from listening to him. 

The challenge this week was leaving the children at a table filled with treats and toys and seeing if they will listen to the rule about not touching anything. 

The parents of Kaitlyn, Micah and Andrew got a reality check when Dr Phil showed them video footage of their lives and revealed that Andrew said that he is just really lonely.  How sad…

Ethan’s parents were shown footage of their lives and they were surprised by how loud their voices were when they spoke to him.  He also confronted his dad about calling his mother a “f***ing b*tch” in front of Ethan.

He told the group that they are going to have to revise their parenting strategy.  Tomorrow the parents are going to have to apologize for how they have been treating their children.  Should be interesting!!!
