Dr. Phil Season Premiere - September 8, 2008

dr-phil-logo Today, Dr. Phil talked about kids using the internet.  He even went into the audience and talked to a mother about her daughter’s MySpace page (her daughter was with her). There had been a picture of the girl wearing a bathing suit and, of course, her friends had left comments about her “boobs” and all that.  A staffer from the control room interrupted and offered to show Dr. Phil his son Jordan’s page.  Dr. Phil and his wife Robyn seemed a little taken aback about seeing his page.  Of course, it ended up not being too bad (I wonder how real that page was…).

Dr. Phil then talked about how putting pictures up on the internet can seriously affect someone’s reputation and have serious implications on their lives.  He used beauty queens as an example and I do think that’s a good one.  He spoke to Miss Washington winner, Elyse Umemoto, who took racy photos on the night she won the pageant.  Someone released the pictures towards the end of her reign in an effort to hurt her and some people feel that she is a poor role model.  Elyse’s explanation is that it is not a reflection of her true personality and that she is sorry the pictures ever made it to the public.

What do you think of a situation like this?  I think that on a night when you win a pageant or achieve some major accomplishment, almost any person is going to act a little more “celebratory” than they normally would in their every day life.  One woman said that, based on those photos, she wouldn’t allow her sons to date Miss Washington and I think that really just goes way too far.  I don’t think it’s right to judge someone based on, literally, a snapshot of their life.

In another segment, Dr. Phil had two young women go for a mock job interview and then the recruiter revealed that, after he met them, he searched for their Facebook profiles in order to learn more about them.  Apparently, this is a common practice today so consider keeping the embarrassing photos off the internet since the recruiter said it is a poor reflection on their judgment skills.  WOW!  The things you learn about on daytime talk shows…
