Dr. Phil Talks About “Body Obsessed” Boys

On today’s Dr. Phil, they discussed a topic that I believe is extremely important – boys with eating disorders/poor body image.  It’s an issue that I feel is grossly overlooked while we talk about women’s weight and eating disorders incessantly.

In our society, there is a lot of pressure for men to be strong and fit.  Maybe it’s not as glaring as the messages that are sent to girls and women but there’s no mistaking that it’s there.  We use words like “scrawny,” “weak” and “skinny” to describe smaller males but hurtful labels like “fat” get thrown at people of both genders.

Perhaps, it’s just that women seemed to want to talk about their problems (or is that societal influence at work again?) but I’ve always wondered why topics like this get overlooked when it pertains to how boys and men feel.

In this video, one young man (who looks so young!) is so obsessed with his physique that he does 1,500 sit-ups and 400 push-ups every day and says that he wishes he could have zero percent body fat.  It makes me so sad!
