Brett Love has posted an in depth review of Everything Comes to a Head for Medium fans. Make sure you take a look. He mentions a lot of things I didn’t even think about, such as the sloppy crime scene work.
He also talks about the ending of the season. I agree that there wasn’t much of a cliffhanger, but I loved the strong note it ended on. Allison straightened them out with a few well chosen words and left without looking back.

Well we don’t know for sure she has no job just as we don’t really know about Devalos’ fate…I think both will be back in their usual roles…her solving of the Recapitator’s case.
Other than Joe’s lawsuit agaibst Aerodytech I think most will go back to “normal” as it could be…
Hopefully the writers will bring Ariel up to assume the “sidekick” role that Lucky has played…I like the guy, but an annual visit is more predictable than sweeps.
Emmy campaign for Patricia and Jake – start it on nbc.com!
All – I meant to say that we should start it here as well as the forums on nbc.com (getting Maria Lark a supporting actress nod @ 10 – doable)?
Clearly our efforts at saving the show worked…for now…
However, let’s not kid ourselves, while we love its quality, its acting, and its respect for our intelligence, the push for season 5 can’t wait until January ‘08…(Or whenever Alison is called back from Neverland to save the Peacock Network from another lame show cancellation)
Agree or disagree, discuss!
I am TOTALLY with you , hammer. It’s never too early to start a campaign for more Medium. Here’s my thoughts.
First of all, Emmy campaigns. Definitely. Here’s a little morsel for you. All of the actors on the show submitted eps for Emmy consideration, with the exception of David Cubitt. And the big push seems to be coming not from NBC, but CBS Paramount. I think Patricia definitely will get a nomination this year, and I hope another win. Jake submitted a good one, and is a long shot, but he could get a nod. Sofia and Maria both submitted excellent tapes, but aren’t realistically in the running. Neither is Miguel Sandoval.
Second, I think we should start writing to NBC now and plead, nay, DEMAND, that the show get better treatment next year, including but not limited to; better promotions, more media coverage, more public appearances, a decent timeslot with a decent lead-in, and a guaranteed renewal for season 5. And an earlier return than January. Anybody else?
That being said, I thought Brett’s review was great, as always. Right on the money. And I may be off-base here, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see more of this story next year. This episode just didn’t feel like a finale to me. And even for Medium, which doesn’t always neatly wrap everything up, it left too many loose ends. And did anyone else notice that this episode didn’t start off with a dream? I kept waiting for Allison to wake up and realize it was all a premonition. Anybody else get that feeling? Like someone else said, the ads for this ep were deliberately misleading, and I have to wonder if either there isn’t more to the story, or the story was changed at the last minute, perhaps after the renewal was handed out, making it a season finale instead of a series finale. Any thoughts?
Katelyn, I submitted a comment, but as usual, it got caught in the spam filter. What’s up with that?
Hi Dawn,
The filter is having issues. I found a whole bunch of you in there, so at least you had some decent company while you were waiting to come out.
I also was wondering if the show was originally supposed to be a two hour series finale. It stopped so abruptly and seemed like it was missing parts even if you don’t think about the ads. However, I still enjoyed it, especially Allison’s last lines.
Hammer,
Yes, if any young actress deserves an award, it is Maria Lark.
Tv show fans have to be like politicians – it is never too early to campaign for your show, including right after it was renewed.
As always, Brett is spot on with his comments. I whole heartedly agree with him about the forensics – they are so sloppy and inconsistent.
I don’t know why they made Scanlon such a butt head in this ep! I think it’s the bad influence from DiNovi – always the one concerned about “image” because of her political ambitions. You know Scanlon wouldn’t give a flying you know what if he thought he had the right information – even if it meant his career – remember when we first met Scanlon and he first met Allison? He’d spent 2 years investigating his sister’s and brother-in-laws deaths even though everyone else told him he was crazy. He didn’t care – he kept at it. Allison was the one who helped him figure it out. I think they made him too harsh – expecially avoiding her calls – after all they have been through togehter,
Joe is out of a job as well as Allison. Even if Devalos comes back, although I don’t see that happening since the other guy has proclaimed himself the “new DA”. It’s an elected position, so how can the other guy just step in without an election? Isn’t there someone in the chain of command just under Devalos who would take over as an interim DA? Maybe the fall will find Devalos running for his job against this guy in the election.
I think we need to write to NBC and beg them to put Medium in the fall when several of their new shows tank – which we know they will.
Curious – why didn’t David Cubitt submitt something for Emmy consideration? I think he certainly deserves it.
someone else noticed that the promo which showed Neve Campbell running away from someone TOWARDS the camera with a masked man behind her and then Patricia Arquette shooting a gun – I do think that the episode WAS edited, both in terms of the gun content and outcome because of Virginia Tech and that the show got renewed.
Anyone else that can find that original promo somehow to prove what I’m saying?
I loved this ep, too, and agree w/ Brett’s comments. Great review!! The crime scene stuff was ridiculous, but it doesn’t bother me too much.
At first I was irritated that they made Scanlon such a turncoat (the scene in the car with you-know-who especially). But I did anticipate that he’d want to distance himself from her. One of the main things that sticks in my mind about the ep is him calling her toxic. What a word! That was awesome. Only a good friend could get away with that cr@ap, and then we finally got some good Scanlon/Allison interaction. I absolutely loved that scene with the two of them fussing at each other. I hope that there will be an apology scene when the show returns in January.
I figured out that Joe was going to get fired mainly because one of the people I was watching w/ repeatedly yelled at the TV, “You’re fired!” I need to start watching alone. It will be interesting to see what happens with Joe, Allison, and Manuel job-wise, and w/ the girls at school.
I also noticed that they didn’t show things that were in the preview. Makes me wonder, too, how much was cut.
I really liked the way I had to do a double take when they abruptly introduced Debra’s death by Joe showing the headline. Just what she wanted–a big headline. And I thought that was a great scene between Debra & Paxton–the look on her face when she realized she’d just screwed herself was priceless.
I also really liked the abrupt ending. The show is never (too) predictable, and Allison just cracks me up. That girl’s got nerve!
Betty, did David Cubitt not submit? I guess he figured there were too many supporting actor possibilities (?) I’d vote for him!
Hammer, I don’t think it was edited because of Virginia Tech – when they showed clips of the previous eps to catch viewers up Wednesday night, they even showed a clip from the hostage ep and included the bad guy blowing away Joe’s friend and co-worker. Earlier, when the 3 episode arc began, they didn’t even show any clips from the hostage ep, instead they had Jake and Allison do their little speech first. I was kind of surprised to see it Wednesday night since they pulled it earlier.
However, I suppose it is possible they changed the content of the episode and re-shot some scenes. Perhaps they had more stuff that lost out during the editing process. I have the previews on tape, so I know none of us who remember those scenes were hallucinating.
I swear, once before, they showed a clip of a scene with Allison and Scanlon for the next week’s show and then when they aired the episode, the scene was different. Perhaps they film a scene a couple of ways sometimes and then the director or editor decides which to use. Something interesting to look for in the extras of the Season 3 DVD! Although they have not shown a lot of deleted scenes in the first 2 seasons, sometimes they add some in with the extras. I think it is interesting to see what someone deemed unneccesary.
Betty, a lot of things about this ep just felt off, including Scanlon’s reaction to Allison, and Devalos just disappearing like that, in addition to the other things I mentioned. That’s why I think we might see more of this story when the show returns. The whole ep played like a dream and I kept expecting Allison to wake up. So I wouldn’t be surprised if the next season doesn’t start off with Allison waking up from a dream. Anybody agree?
I wrote a letter to GGC and asked just what was up with this episode because it just seemed like such a letdown after building momentum and promoting it the way they did. I don’t expect a response but it couldn’t hurt to try, could it? But I really do think we should all write to NBC and plead with them to treat Medium better next season. What are they gonna do? Ignore us? They pretty much do that already.
Oh, and Betty, I hate to say it, but I just don’t think David Cubitt had an Emmy tape to submit this year. There really weren’t any episodes where he really got to shine this season. The others though, all had great tapes, but as I said, Patricia is the only one with a realistic shot, and Jake could get in. Here’s what they submitted.
Patricia- Be Kind, Rewind
Jake- The One Behind the Wheel
Sofia- Mother’s Little Helper
Maria- Apocalypse Push
Miguel- Whatever Possessed You
All of them are submitted in supporting categories, except Patricia, who is in the lead actress category, and her odds are really good right now. What do you think of their choices? Poll idea, Katelyn?
I must say that I really enjoyed the season finale (I haven’t has time to watch it a second time yet–I’ve been so busy)! The shabby police work really didn’t bother me, I was too caught up in the story, which I think played out extremely well. Everyone did a fantastic job.
So, neither Joe or Allison have a job. How will this play out? If Joe sues, companys might not want to hire him, and a lawsuit can take a very long time to play out. I can’t see all of Allison’s exposure problems going away magically over the summer break, she won’t just be able to get her old job back, will she? And what about Devalos and Scanlon? They’ll still be on the show, right?
It also bothered me that the Van Dyke guy was able to come in and call himself “the new DA.” That’s an elected position and I doubt he was suppose to be the next in command.
It seems like they could have done a lot more with this episode which also leads me to believe that we haven’t quite seen the end of this story. I, too, remember seeing Allison shooting a gun in the previews. Maybe it will be a deleted scenes on the season 3 DVD (I hope that comes out soon, my DVD can’t tape anything else because it’s full of Medium).
Where did you hear about the Emmy tapes, Dawn? I’d love to hear more about it.
I’m all up for helping the campaign to get more Medium and sooner. Just tell me what to do!
Dawn, I would also love to hear more about the Emmy tapes. It is a shame that Jake Weber would not be more seriously considered for an Emmy. His work is amazing. I think that Jake’s submission of One Behind the Wheel is an excellent choice. His work in the last 3-4 episodes was also stellar.
I read The Envelope forum at LAtimes.com. When you go to the forum at The Envelope, read the Primetime Emmys thread. there are several categories about the nominees and their campaigns, and everyone’s predictions for the final nominees. A lot of people are predicting Patricia will get a nom this year. Right now, she’s in the top six in vote getters among Envelope readers, and is a strong contender.
Also my thought was that we should write to NBC over the summer and plead with them to bring the show back earlier and to give it more promotional support, like we did when there was talk that it might be cancelled. Maybe if enough people make their voices heard, the network will listen. I found an address and I will post it later as to where to write with concerns & issues with the networks schedules.
Brenna, I agree with you that Jake’s tape was the perfect choice for him, although I argued that it was also a perfect choice for Patricia, but I was finally converted by the other readers that Be Kind, Rewind was a better submission for her (not really, but I told them that). Let’s just hope that the Emmy voters agree with us and give him a nomination. And Patricia. I would LOVE to see one or both of them win an Emmy.
Here’s the address I found to write to NBC with concerns about the scheduling.

Or you can call the NBC switchboard at 818-840-4444 and ask for the viewer comments line.
We could also go back to writing Kevin Reilly and petitioning them to give the show the respect it deserves.

Correction: the number for Kevin Reilly should be 818-840-3532 instead of 3523.
[...] Dawn suggested a great poll idea. Cast your vote for the person you think is most likely to bring home an Emmy. Hopefully, the poll will work for everyone this time, but if it doesn’t, please feel free to add a comment instead. [...]
Hi Dawn,
Yes, that is a fantastic idea for a poll and I’ve posted it. I was just about to post contact information, but you beat me to it. I guess that’s what I get for taking the day off yesterday.
Sorry, Katelyn. Didn’t mean to steal your thunder.
Dawn,
Steal away! I don’t mind at all.
Dawn, I think One Behind the Wheel would have been a better choice for Patricia. Oh, Be Kind, Rewind is not bad either, I guess. I would truly love to see them both of them win EMMYs. Great to have info re: how to contact NBC. The show was renewed. Let’s get it starting up before January 08.
Brenna, I totally agree with you about The One Behind the Wheel, but as the other readers at the Envelope kept pointing out to me, it could get confusing to the Emmy voters about which character she was in, and not seeing her as Allison Dubois. But Be Kind, Rewind allows her to show a wider range of emotions as she plays the same day different ways, and also the badass scene and the scene in the hospital when she discovers she has no legs, are more likely to stand out to the Emmy voters. But I absolutely agree that TOBTW was BY FAR her BEST work this year, hands down. My gut reaction when I first saw that was, if she submits this, she’s guaranteed an Emmy. But BK,R was her choice for the Golden Globes and the SAGs and she got nominations, though she didn’t win. Which is why I think she should have gone with TOBTW.
Just between us, the actors have until May 31st to change their submissions, and I’m hoping that Patricia will change hers to The One Behind the Wheel. I really believe if she does, she’s a shoo-in for another Emmy.
And I’m already writing to NBC about their schedule next year. And I hope everyone else will too. We have to let them know how much we love this show and we don’t appreciate it being treated this way.
Dawn, I wonder if she would change her submission. I am glad she has a chance for the nomination.
Who is the competition in Jake Weber’s category? I am little biased I guess, but I don’t know why Jake isn’t given serious consideration.
I’ll be contacting NBC as well regarding scheduling.
I am bummed as well that there don’t appear to be any repeats scheduled of the shows from Season 3. (I have kept the last six episodes on my DVR, but would like to see the rest of Season 3 again.)
I live in Western Canada, and I cannot access the full length videos on the website.
Sorry, I am whining!
Brenna, in Jake’s category, most of the people are picking the guys from Lost, Boston Legal, and the Sopranos. I think most people are going with which shows have the most “buzz” and unfortunately, Medium just doesn’t have it, and sadly, neither does Jake, though a few are picking him as a long shot to get a nom. I agree with you that he is a fantastic actor who more than holds his own on a show where Patricia is the obvious star, and he does deserve some recognition. But to get into the top ten and even have a shot at a nomination, they first have to get picked by a popular vote, and I”m afraid he just doesn’t have the buzz or the name recognition to compete with those other guys.
I would really like to see Patricia change her submission, but I don’t think she will. She has proven to be pretty stubborn about certain things. Last year, she blew her submission with the tape she chose, which cost her a nomination. But it was her favorite and that’s what she submitted. And I think this tape could get her a nomination, especially if all the other women choose weaker tapes (which some have) but I still think TOBTW would have made her a lock for an Emmy.
Oh, and fyi, you can find all of the season 3 eps online at dailymotion.com and at tv-links.co.uk. But I think NBC will show some reruns as we get closer to next season. Hopefully, if we make our voices heard, we can get them to bring it back sooner.
Dawn, you’re right, the popular vote is just not there for Medium. Sigh. It’s really too bad.
Also, too bad that Patricia likely won’t change the submission.
Thanks for the tips re: episodes. I can’t get the tv-links.co.uk to work. Dailymotion.com works but it is very slow and choppy…better than nothing!
I thought it was a good ending too. She left (almost) without looking back. I really enjoyed Medium but they are making it about too many killers rather than just an interesting story. She stopped even seeing the ghosts which usually gave the show a bitter sweet twist that it is hugely missing now. Here in Ontario they keep switching around the time and evenings so I miss nearly each show. I think I only caught three this season.
I just checked out the Envelope and was happy to see Patricia’s name thrown around quite a bit. However, I only once saw Jake Weber mentioned. What a shame.
I think “Be Kind, Rewind” is a pretty good pick. It was my favorite episode this season for quite some time. It does show a range of emotion (remember her losing her legs) and I think will most likely get her nominated. “The One Behind the Wheel” is the perfect submission for Jake, and it also would have been a good one for Patricia, too. It might have thrown people who are not exactly familiar with the show off, but who knows.
I was surprised to see that there is an award for best writing. Medium’s writers are awesome, to bad that they don’t have a chance.
Well, Holly, I think that their writers may stand a small chance against some of the things out there. The Medium is such a different show, it’s nothing like what we usually see. We either have one show dedicated to all things fantasy, and another dedicated to suspense, and another dedicated to horror (Well, murders. CSI, etc.), and then there’s another dedicated to law and what not.
Medium is put together in such a way that it can involve all of these things without screwing it up and making it entirely unbelievable. I mean, of course there are SOME things that aren’t detailed aspects, like stated in the review, but it’s not dedicated solely to one genre. I think if they can
have a fan base like this, with dedicated hardcore fans, then they have done an EXCELLENT job!
Dawn, David Cubitt did start off strong this year – remember in Four Dreams and also Be Kind Rewind he had a strong presence. He did have that part with the guy he sponsored in NA that was killed – although I thought his part should have been even bigger in that one – can’t think of the ep title at the moment.
Do they just get to submit one episode? Doesn’t seem fair – seems like they should be able to submit several clips – a compilation of their work from the entire season.
It would be a real kick for any of the girls to win or even be nominated!
nansee, I guess you are right about the scene with Allison & Scanlon – they often have these conversations where he tells her “no” and then always gives in and says “yes”. They haven’t had a good interaction in a long time. This one was just so volatile it brought me back to the first time they met and Scanlon said, ” Do I have the word ‘ass’ tatooed across my forehead” and Allison replied, “Yes but it has the word ‘jack’ in front of it!”
That was one funny scene!
Toxic was such a mean word. I can understand his frustration and taking it personally that this guy was still killing people and he couldn’t catch him or a break in the case. you know what they say, *hit rolls down hill!
Forensicly, the coroner should have been able to tell that whoever cut off the first woman’s head, was not the same one that cut off the other women’s heads. Women and men have different strength levels and it would be difficult to imagine an average woman who has the strength to decapitate someone – that takes a LOT of strength. Plus two people would just cut differently (7 years of watching CSI).
hello
im new on this forum….
