Actress Emma Caulfield may have spent five years as Anya on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but for her latest projects she’s focused on being the romantic lead (in TiMER) and vapid celebutante (in the upcoming teen TV show Gigantic). Emma spoke exclusively to Crushable about her recent work, that one project she regrets and why she’d like to be George Clooney for the day.
In TiMER, which opened in L.A. last Friday and debuts in New York on May 14, Emma plays Oona, a woman in search of love in a world where (almost) everyone gets a timer installed on their wrist that counts down to the second they will lay eyes on their true love. As she waits for her timer to count down, Oona struggles with whether she should pursue relationships with men who are clearly not her match. Being a romantic lead is a departure for Emma. “I’m usually someone in peril, suspicious of somebody, with some sort of a supernatural element going on maybe as well,” she told us. “So this is definitely a unique experience for me and one that I had been so so eager to do and wanting to do.”
What drew her to TiMER, explained Emma, was its “unique concept.”
“It was totally original,” she said. “The dialogue, everything about its tone was totally natural and organic, and it just flowed. I laughed out loud the entire time I was reading it. Everything was beautifully crafted…If you’re looking for something unique, that has something to say, that will make you think and make you laugh and maybe even make you cry, and visit a world that you don’t want to end, then you should go see it.”
On Gigantic, which Emma said has shot 18 episodes and is just waiting to air, Emma plays Sasha, a sexy, if somewhat untalented, girlfriend of an Australian action star. “She’s an actress herself but really gets parts because of who she is dating,” Emma told Crushable of her character. “There are plenty of those in real life Hollywood, so there is a lot to draw on in that regard. She is kind of nightmare but she’s ultimately lovable. Marti [Noxson, who worked with Emma on Buffy] knows how to write that. I did that for 5 years on Buffy. I played someone who was borderline unlikeable but you always ended up rooting for her.”
Although she is proud of her two recent projects, Emma also admitted to us that she hasn’t always been happy with everything she’s worked on. “Nothing that I was aware of at the time — but when I saw what had become of it, I was horrified,” she said. “I’ve had that experience where I was like, “Oh, that’s not what I shot.” Darkness Falls is a pretty good example. We shot a really different film than what ended up being cut together and distributed. And while it made everybody a lot of money, I was surprised and unhappy when I saw the screening of it. I was like, ‘Wow, what is this? I don’t understand. This is a completely different movie.’ That’s really disconcerting when it happens.”
And Emma didn’t hesitate when we asked her whose job she would steal, if she could. “I wouldn’t mind being George Clooney for a minute,” she said. “He seems to have his hands in so many different, very worthwhile ventures at any given time and looks like he’s having a lot of fun doing whatever it is. I wouldn’t mind being very creative on many different levels and being very socially aware and philanthropic. It’s just a really awesome combination. He just makes it look so easy and I know it isn’t. It would be cool to live in his world, live in that Italian villa for awhile.”
