Fantasia Barrino really, REALLY wanted the part of Effie in the new Dreamgirls movie. REALLYYYYY wanted it. So much, that she called Jennifer Hudson up and called her a name:
American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino was devastated when fellow talent show contestant Jennifer Hudson beat her to the part of Effie White in the forthcoming Dreamgirls movie.
Barrino, who beat Hudson in the 2004 season of the televised music contest, auditioned for the role of the troubled sixties singer, but lost out to Hudson.
She says, "I was a little hurt. I remember calling Jennifer. She picked up the phone and I said, ‘Heifer, you took my part.’"
Now, I know sometimes we girls like to kid around with each other, but this doesn’t sound like kidding around. What do you think?
And who do you think is the better singer? I say Jennifer Hudson by far; Fantasia’s got an irritating voice. Here’s two clips.

I guess you guy did not see the tribute to Aretha Franklin. I love Jennifer Hudson to death, but Fantasia brought the house down. She did not miss one beat. On the other hand, Jennifer was a little pitchy and she did not tell a story in her music. When you sing, you should be telling a story. I did not feel the emotion with her like I did with Fantasia’s version of “Rock Steady” and “Baby I Love You” Fantasia was all over these two songs and it was seamless with hardly any effort and it was not mechanical. Soulful music is some of the hardest music to sing even for some black singers, but it comes so easily for Fantasia. You guys tend to forget that every singer has a different style. Wouldn’t this be a boring world if everyone was alike? The bottom line is that Fantasia is anointed and humble, which is why she always brings the house down. She really feels the music and the music feels her. I do admit her voice is “screechy,” but this is what makes her different and unusual. She tends to scream, but so do rock singers and nothing is ever said. Why does every time you find a talented black women who “screeches,” they say that they can’t sing? It’s all in personal taste, but it’s truly because most black singers have something to sing about: whether it is being ridicule for being second best to the other races or whether if it is because the black have come along way since slavery. It’s all in the blood and it stems back to slavery and your “wanna-be” singers who try to sing our music always sound mechanical. Like I said before, it has to be seamless and it can be challenging even for black folks to sing hardcore soulful music like Aretha Franklin. Fantasia has master that craft of soulful music and JHUD has mastered the craft of “slow powerful ballads.” They are unique in their own special way. Although JHUD is very talented, her voice is made for those “Whitney Houston” songs: loud and powerful, whereas, Fantasia fits those very soulful songs like that of Aretha Franklin. Fantasia is like Aretha Franklin, Patti Label, and Tina Turner rolled up into one package. Fantasia’s live performance has been a lot better than JHUD’s performances. JHUD did an outstanding job in the movie, but when she sang “And I am telling you” live, it did not come across like it did in the movies. It was like she did not have any conviction in conjunction with her vocals. For example, Jennifer Holliday sang this song on Broadway with conviction. Holliday also song this song with conviction live also. Remember when Simon on idol said something to the effect “…this is why we are so critical to those singers who just sing well.” In other words, if you are anointed with a gift, you tend to bring the house down because people really feel the spirit when you sing. On Idol, Fantasia started out well and soared from there. However, it took Jennifer a little while to peak. By the time she peaked, she had already been voted off the show. That’s the difference between some one who is anointed as well as gifted versus someone is just gifted. Sometime a person can have the worse voice, but if they are anointed, they tend to soar or outshine the person who just sings well (see the difference?). Why do you think so many people love Mary J. Blide? She is so sincere in her daily walk in the business and she also paid her dues. In the past, Mary J. Blide hit some crazy notes, but it’s something about her that makes people love her. That’s the different between people who just sing well. Both singers are gifted, but JHUD is not anointed like Fantasia is, however, she will get there as long as she continues to ask God to strengthen her in her weak areas. The same thing goes for Fantasia. I believe the anointing will come later on for JHUD. God has something even greater for Fantasia and JHUD. It will all come in time. Remember, Idol was Fantasia’s time to shine and Dreamgirls was JHUD’s time to shine. They both will get their time to shine again, but let’s not beat them up. Let’s love them as God loves us. This is why God is so special because he made us all different. Some people are blessed with the charisma to make people feel good and some people are blessed to sound good. We are supposed to take our talents and mold them and this is what Fantasia and JHUD should be doing as God continues to bless them. Remember, no one person is perfect. Even the best singers in the world have not reached their peak. God can always take you to another level and God has taken these two great women to great levels and will continue to bless them far beyond what we ever thought possible!
Here is something to remember. Many female vocalists tend to use their sexuality in conjunction with their voice to get them over, but Fantasia and JHUD don’t need to do a whole lot of “booty shaking” to win their fans over. All they have to do is just sing and use their talent that God gave them.

If Jenifer is this great legendary singer that you say she is then you don’t have to post something like this to discredit Fantasia or Beyone, i have checked too and there fans or friends and family have not posted things like this. This mess started right after Dreamgirls around december and I believe as th eprevious writer JHud has a lot to do with this in the long run, it’s not going to get her anywhere. the people who love Fantasia are going to always love her and this site will probably get her more support form blacks because we know you no longer where sheets on your head as the lady said you hide behind the internet and I agree it is poor white folks who posted this. because the wealthy and intelligent ones have better things to do!!!!
The lady is right jHud family, fans keep it up and I will make sure all of my friends see it to see how far your jealousy for Beyonce and Fantasia really goes and how far you will go to discredit others to make yourself look good and because of this underhanded technigue I now believe you did steal the role and her screentest is as they said it was off the chain, what are you afraid of, she did win Idol and you hated it, your hatred for her is so obvious, your fans have made sure we see ti, this site hurts you more than here. First of all this is a hate site against Beyonce and Fantasia.
Secondly, we have done our research and no other entertainers fan base have gone as far as you have gone to discredit Fantasia, and now to even put Beyonce in your mess.

Thirdly you have really worked overtime on Fantasia, why would you post something from nearly four years ago from and Idol performance and today she is a Broadway Star, why don’t you post her recent Tony performance or her singing on the Oprah show, better yet why don’t you get a hold of her screentest for Dreamgirls and post hat, for a role she had been given but it was recended and given to JHud, because of her image being white American.
But like all of this adverse hype and hate towards Fantasia backfired because you didin’t know that the richest woman in this country has been watching her and people that love Fantasia made sure that her screen test got into the right hands, all this hate and bad press is going to backfire on Jhud because it is her fan base who is doing this. As for Beyonce, she has paid her dues and Fantasia has for that matter and how dare you compare Jennifer Hudson to her, do you think that jennifer will never have to pay her dues in the industry.
If you choose her as your token black person then you can have her, in fact my friends and I didn’t watch Idol, but we became Fantasia and Beyonce supporters because of all of this kind of hype and we saw no one was bashing Fantasia except the sights attached to Jhud, so it is her fan base and maybe even her family and friends who are posting this.
Like I said like before it’s going to backfire on you Jhud, Beyonce does nto do this nor does any other entertainer, why do you and your fan base hate Fantasia and Beyonece so much, like I previously said if you are so great then none of this is necessary.
Another thing Whitney has not gone anyplace and dream on you are not replacing her, why can’t you be yourself, but who is yourself????

Well, do you all agree that Fantasia should throw in the towel, because it’s obvious she is finished now that Jennifer Hudson is on the scene. Would you also agree that what she is doing on Broadway a joke to all of us. She should quit while she is ahead. Yea, you guys look at ugly Fantasia and poised and classy Jennifer, like people say Fantasia will nevr amount to anything and I believe someone paid those critics, and Jennifer got better reviews than Fantasia, white folk prefer Jennifer over Fantasia because she is prettier and comes from a better family, i agree wtih you, if Fantasia could have had music lessons it may have helped her it’s too late now, her family was poor, she is no competition for Jennifer hudson.

I forgot to mention…I do think Jennifer Hudson is better (to me.) Her voice is more soothing then Fantasia’s voice.
First of all, just cause someone said something about gay people, doesnt make them a worst singer then other people. It all depends on people’s style of music sound. Fantasia has a more harsh voice, and Jennifer Hudson has a more smooth voice, like Whitney houston or Jennifer Hoilliday (who may I mind played the old Effie.)
And if you need a live performance with Jennifer Hudson, then try to find her singing at the Academy Awards, Im sure you’ll see she’s amazing live too.
Jennifer Hudson is by far the better singer. I’ve never heared anyone who could fire up those vocals as she does. So those of you who don’t like Ms Judson strew you.
personally, i love that song of fantasia’s and i did like her for awhile, but i find she tends to strain her voices on some high notes and it turns into a squeal which ruins the song.
jennifer, on the other hand is just a natural beauty and her voice is sensational. out of the two, i have to say that i feel the emotion more when jennifer sings.
when i was watching dreamgirls (and im telling you i’m not going) i actually cried. i felt her pain and tears and everything.
i gotta say, jen has a gift and she deserved that oscar. beyonce or fantasia aint got shit on her!
By the way she was 19 years old, and as someone said you will pull a live performance from three years ago, and she has gotten better, and used a stage recording to compare with. Low blow, I saw jennifer at Clive Davis do this and there were no reviews the next day, and her performance live was mediocre, you’re talking about someone who won an Oscar for the song. Fantasia has her own son, she is different, Jennifer sounds like the other churchgirls and a lot like Beyonce.
Lord have mercy, I am so tired of all this comparison. I would like to know who were the 65 million people who voted for Fantasia. jennifer was at the bottom three moret ahn once. I noticed the date on these responses Fantasia is on broadway, doing a Fantastic job and guess the critics who did the reviews are worng or liars. I’ve seen the production and whether you like it or not I believe Fantasia is here to stay. One thing I will say is the young lady observed at the stage door was the sweeetest and warmest entertainer I have met i a long time. She really loves people, I even asked my son when returning to the hotel, why is she not bitter people have been so mean to her, here it is three years later JHud comes on the scene and it’s like she is the second coming. But I remember on woman who recieved the same or even worst flck many years ago, and was told she was too ugly for television. Today she endorses Fantasia, God always has a ram in the bush. You all probably don’t like her either. Fantasia will be alright and so willjennifer, they both have their fan bases, but I will put integrity, humility, and good character up against the greatest talent in the world. Her cast members speak highly of her and New York is being very good to her, like a breath of fresh air and she needed, that’s probably why I support andpray a lot for Fantasia, because she does not have the support Jennifer has, and I believe she is going to be alright. You all don’t have to like her or listen to her music, the Lord will provide because it is God who has brought her this far and he will carry her the rest of the way I applaud all of her hard work. She is putting in the work and I pray she will be richly rewarded, and many of you still may not accept her, but she is an inspiration to many young people, to let them see dreams are not just for sleeping.
I prefer an artist that makes me feel the song, rather than someone who just relies on belting out a song.
Fantasia just does it for me on so many levels that Jen just cannot.
