The numbers that this movie is bringing in, is proof that America wanted to see Vin Diesel and Paul Walker reunited. Diesel and Walker have both had a couple of hit movies, but also their fair share of flops. But now, literally overnight, they are back on top.

“Tom Hanks once told me that it doesn’t matter where you are in your career, you’ll always have highs and lows,” Diesel says. “This just happens to be a high. I’m just so appreciative and grateful that all these people that I talk to, verbally and nonverbally, through my films all showed up at the theater. They came out in droves—double the amount the studio thought we were going to appeal to. That is such a cool feeling. I’m just high on life at the moment.”

Walker believes he and Diesel got lucky.

“We got lucky,” he says. “For some reason, the movie gods weren’t ready to see Vin and me wiped off the face of the earth just yet.”

Who was the inspiration of this reunion? Vin Diesel was.

Still, let’s give credit where it’s due—it was Diesel who inspired the reunion sequel. The actor had turned down a role in the franchise’s first sequel, 2 Fast 2 Furious, reportedly because the producers wouldn’t meet his price. But Diesel later agreed to do a cameo at the end of the third film. “The test audiences just went nuts when they saw Vin,” recalls franchise producer Neal Moritz. “That’s when we knew we had to bring him back for the fourth film. And then we just thought, Why not bring back everybody?” There was only one hitch: None of the actors were interested, at least at first. “Paul didn’t want to do it. Vin didn’t want to do it. Nobody wanted to do it,” says director Justin Lin. “Even getting Vin to do that cameo in the third movie was a real struggle. I had to go and convince him. I literally had to go to Vin’s house and have a meeting with him at his pool.”
