Exciting news for fans of sad pop music! (Well, the lucky ones, anyway.) Perhaps awakened from her slumber by the mediocre vocal stylings of Lana Del Rey, Fiona Apple will return from the nineties to remind us all what a sexy-jazzy-weird vocal powerhouse is supposed to sound like with a performance at Austin’s South By Southwest music festival next month. Hooray!
The announcement comes via infamous music criticism site Pitchfork, who’ve hooked Fiona to open their SXSW showcase. (Perhaps their disappointment with Born To Die made them nostalgic for the vaunted singer-songwriter, too.) The show will take place on March 15 at Central Presbyterian Church, an intimate space that holds about 400 people. As she’s only played a handful of shows since 2007 and a whole lot more than 400 people want to see her, I’d suggest securing your credentials yesterday.
Nobody is saying yet whether she’ll play new material, but considering she complained last November that “I can’t remember [how to play] any of my new songs because they’ve been done for a fucking year,” I’m guessing she’s got some ready to go. (According to her label, Epic Records, the album will finally drop this year.) In any case, why not tide yourself over this chilly V-Day with some of her wall-punching-ly good anti-love songs?
