The Five Year Engagement Launches A Trailer And A Viral Blog Following Jason Segel And Emily Blunt’s Relationship

We’ve been eagerly waiting to see what kind of couple that the the adorable Jason Segel and hilariously stern Emily Blunt make in their new romantic comedy The Five-Year Engagement. The producers — one of whom worked on Bridesmaids – smartly parlayed this comedic pairing into a viral blog tied in to the movie, which tracks the engagement of their characters Violet and Tom.

For now, TomandViolet.com has just been “published” with some introductory details about the couple — who live in the Bay Area — like how they met at New Year’s Eve last year and the song that Tom used for the proposal. It’s a really smart way to get us interested in a couple before the movie even starts; plus, there are plenty of lines that hint at the film’s conflict, like how they were together for only a year before getting engaged or how Violet wants to get tenure at UC Berkeley.

Because here’s the actual plot of the movie: Newly-engaged Tom and Violet are easygoing about when they’ll actually get married, until she gets offered a two-year program at the University of Michigan. They uproot their lives thinking it’ll be a quick detour… except that she gets offered a better job for a couple more years. During this time, they’re constantly updating and changing their wedding plans and probably moving away from what they had originally envisioned.

Although you see a lot of the plot in the three-minute trailer, I think that Jason and Emily have enough chemistry that there will still be plenty of surprises in the movie itself. After all, with these actors and producers, there’s just as good a chance that things will end with a wedding or with a break-up.

And in the months leading up to the movie’s release on April 27th, we’ll be refreshing Tom and Violet’s blog. In fact, Emily could get some tips from her new husband John Krasinski: When his character Jim married longtime love Pam (Jenna Fischer) on The Office, they too had an engagement/marriage blog complete with some honeymoon videos.

Here’s the trailer:
