Fox News actually had something nice to say today about Katie Holmes’ performance in “All My Sons”. Did you just fall out of your chair? Yeah, I almost did.
They didn’t give an official review, but instead a “report”. Okay. I’ll go with that. The writer of the story,Roger Friedman, saw the play on Saturday night. He said it was a packed house and there were people outside trying to buy tickets. He also mentioned that after the show, a line of Katie fans formed, although he was hoping they were for the other cast members of the play as well.
Overall, this is what he had to say about her performance:
“She isn’t bad. She’s up against some real pros, and she holds her own. Like most movie and TV actors, her voice and projection need work. But she knows her lines, appears to understand the character and does not embarrass herself at all. Given the pressures involved, that’s a lot.”
I have read other places about her needing to work on her voice projection, but I imagine that has a lot to do with her nerves. Katie is under a lot of pressure to perform well and from the sounds of it, she is doing just fine.
We have all seen Katie heading into rehearsals 6 days a week and her and the cast are obviously working very long hours. Mr. Friedman agrees Katie is working hard.
“The main thing is, Katie Holmes is in most of the play, and is working damn hard. She doesn’t need anyone to “save” her.”

Yes….this is what I mentioned weeks ago on this website ….that she needs to work on her voice projection. Anyone would have suspected that b/c of how her natural speaking voice is very quiet…think back to her Oprah interview. I knew that nobody would need to save her while on stage….as I have written before, she is an actress and has done quite a bit already so it comes as no surprise that she can hang with the pros! In addition, she has spent hours upon hours working her tail off! Congrats!
I predict that this is what we’re going to hear from most of the critics. People that have seen it say that Patrick Williams is amazing, that Lithgow and Wiest are always amazing and that Katie holds her own, which is consistent with Friedman’s report.
I agree with him that Anon should stay away. If they want to protest they can do so at Tom’s movie in a couple of months. That would be more appropriate, if at all. I don’t get the Free Katie stuff. She was 25 when she made the choice to join CoS, not a teenager. She should have, by that time, known what she was doing. I understand that love is blind, but if she didn’t know what she got into then, I’m sure she does by now. Regardless, she’s insignificant and Anon should, out of respect for the play and other plays in the area, take their right to free speech to a more appropriate arena.
“Isn’t that bad” and “holds her own” are not exactly stunning votes of confidence. That’s not a good review. It’s just not a completely bad review.
I hope the NY critics see her a little better than that. Reviews like that are not going to get her hired by other producers.
what do you mean what she got into katie is happy and healthy and loves life with tom and kids
Those reviews sound more like “damning with faint praise”…was hoping she would do better & really shine…
I am not shocked at Friedman’s remarks. He had turned into a joke and people were no longer respecting his views/ reports. Fox TV in general is a joke, but Friedman was a nasty bitter joke. Especially after attacking Valkyrie on the strength of watching a trailer. His attacks on TC were too personal and not even accurate most of the time.
I never expected Katie to steal the show but I am happy she does a great job and even nasty naysayers cannot help but admit that.
I knew Katie was going to be good, because dramatic roles really suit her and the people who bagged her and said she was going to flop, are now having to eat their words, and best of all horrible people can’t go around saying that her husbands ex wifes play made 4million and that nobody was interested in Katie and tickets were not selling. Go Katie!
Lets wait and see what the REAL critics say about the play and Katie’s performance. Whether good or bad I’ll never pay attention to what a GOSSIP columnist “pretending” to be a critic says about the play or Katie for that matter.
The review by Roger Friedman sounded like he was being fair to all the performers.
This play has had a very long rehearsal time, so I’m confident when opening night comes Katie will be ready for it.
Have to say I’m glad she won’t be singing and dancing like she did in that Eli Stone video!!!
So dreadful!
Nicole clearly has her beat hands down in the singing and dancing department!
It’s great that she’s doing solid work. She not a trained stage actress, and unlike the dance segment for ELI STONE, where she worked really hard and did 5o takes (WOW!, that’s a lot of takes!), she has to spot on for every performance because there are no re-takes. It’s a great training ground for her. She’s never been a brilliant actress, but I bet she’s learning a great deal.
I saw the play last weekend and totally agree that her voice projection needs work. It definitely sounded too forced. But other than that she did a good job, especially at the peak of her character’s emotion (for lack of better words right now) –that was when she was best. Overall, the play was amazing.
