One of my favorite Brad Pitt movies is one that is sadly underrated. People often forget about Seven Years in Tibet which, while kind of epically long, was a very good story. I loved the scenery in it almost as much as I loved seeing Brad in it.
This YouTube user set scenes from the movie to the film’s theme song, and it’s quite beautifully done.
If you’ve never actually seen the movie before (and you really should!), here’s the official trailer.
I have to admit, it always distracts me a bit to hear someone speaking with a foreign accent that is not their own, but once the movie gets going, the story kind of pushes the accent aside and I didn’t notice it as much. Still, Brad Pitt speaking with a German accent is quite funny at first!
The movie is almost two and a half hours long, but oh it’s so worth it. It’s incredibly worth it. I can’t believe it’s been 12 years since I saw it in the theater (I feel old now), but I remember being excited to go see it since I was in the process of learning about Tibet and the Dalai Lama.
Perhaps I’ll give this one a watch again this weekend!

Thought Brad did a brilliant support role to Rick Schroder in “Across the Tracks” I think he is seriously underrated as an actor overall, ie no Oscar, etc…
This movie is like a hidden stream, like a hidden spot you go back to since childhood. The character played by Brad Pitt goes through such a fascinating transformation, which is quite rare in movies now a days — I give this movie two thumbs up. Brad and the rest of the cast did an amazing job, most of all, the writer and the film makers told a very worthwile story. It’s a good movie in its own right — but it becomes even more fascinating when you learn that this is actually based on a true story! Highly recommended indeed.
ek “cool world”, and “jonny suede” watch them because you should make your own opinion, but I cane tell you once was enough for me.
Seven Years in Tibet great movie thanks for the clip I haven’t seen it in a while my have to go find my copy and throw it on the VCR tonight.
lol Lucy… You’re on to something… :oP
Hey Sherry, thanks for reminding us all about this movie. I can’t believe I’ve never seen it, because I’m not only a huge Brad Pitt fan, but I’ve been fascinated by Tibet for a while now. Have you seen the movie “Kundun”? It’s a beautiful film on the life of the Dalai Lama, directed by Scorsese.
The movie “Kundun” actually inspired my first trip to Asia, eight years ago. For three weeks, I traveled around mainland China, but never made it to Tibet–in part because of the expense and the restrictions (a special visa is required, you must travel in a group with a tour guide, etc), but also because I wanted to be ready to really SEE the region and devote a good chunk of time to it. I still hope to go one day…. Thanks for reminding me of that too! In
I’m going to need to start making my own Brad Pitt DVD box set. There are so many of his films I haven’t seen yet (esp the early ones, like “Cool World,” “Johnny Suede” and “Across the Tracks;” anyone have any opinions on these?).
The young Dalai Lama calls him the man with yellow hair in this film. I think he broke up with Gwen after this movie. He seems to make movies with numbers in them: Seven, 12 Monkeys, Ocean 11, 12, 13, and Seven Years in Tibet.
Wow…I’ve never seen this movie before. Thanks Sherry. It looks gorgeous. Love the cinematography. OK, Brad’s accent definitely needed work. LOL! I’ll have to put this on my list of movies to watch.
Finally got around to seeing Fight Club. OMG! Great film!!! Crisp dialogue, fantastic editing, and top-notch acting, especially by Brad. I could see Angie playing the Helena Bonham Carter character, especially since it was done around the time she did Girl Interrupted.
I love this movie. Brad is quite a good looking Austrian blond. There are also funny parts of the film. To think that he would really have a son someday in real life is amazing.
I haven’t seen the movie yet, I never paid much attention to Brad before, after watching Mr. & Mrs. Smith, I became a fan. Of course, I am an Angie fan first then Brad. God bless them.
Happy Fourth of July. God bless the Jolie-Pitt family.
I too loved that movie Sherry. In fact, it is on my top ten list. The beautiful, haunting theme “Moonlight” has always been one of my favorite pieces of music. It is also the Ocean’s series music theme. I always thought that is showed that Brad had the makings of a good dad after watching it years ago. He always said he learned many lessons from the film and his humility seems very sincere in interviews after that time. My favorite line is when he says, “butter tea is not my cup of tea.” The accent is cute. His heart was broken after that movie, so humility came in handy. Well, now, I have got to see it again also. Thanks for the reminder.
I loved this film. The scenery was breathtaking since it is a “true” story it added more to the film. To think what China has done to Tibet and it’s people it truly is a crime. When you watch this film it seems like the pages of history turn before your eyes. I personally think that Brad did a great job, accent and all, but I am a little bit bias. It might be long at times but not for me I fell into the story and Brad of course, it was great.
Happy Independence Day everyone.
Need to watch this movie. Time is passing quickly
OT Happy 4th of July
#1 Babel,
#2 Fight Club, #3 Seven Years in Tibet,
#4 Mr. & Mrs Smith (critically, the movie wasn’t really that good tastewise. It’s rather just a personal liking. They had such an easy, contageous chemistry in that one. I know everyone in here has that on their list ;o) ),
#5 Seven
(Perhaps some new ones’ll be added to the top-list after Tree of Life and Inglourious Basterds… Who knows.)
Sherry, I have to concur – the scenery is addictive. I just fell (in love with) for the pre-occupation-Tibet (sadly, today, it’s nowehere near what it once was). The city, the palace, the nature, mountains, the people. A truly recommended watch!
As for the German – well.. Brad looked the part, but good heavens… that accent… :oP As a German-speaker, I found it rather funny, even though I was 11 or something when it came out. But heck – as Sherry pointed out, that sort of just fades away to the background once you get into the movie.
Thanks for the clip! :o)
That was the first DVD I ever brought. It was a lovely film!
i was able to finally watch this movie early this year. there were parts were it was bo.ring but overall, i thought it was very funny – Brad was very funny and the story is very touching too.
