Getting Along with Your In-Laws

Sometimes, a new daughter or son-in-law is welcomed into their new family with welcomed arms.  It’s an ideal outcome since marriage really is about combining two families to create a new one.  Unfortunately, things don’t always go as smoothly and it can be devastating for everyone involved.  I’ve even seen it lead to divorces and nasty custody battles.

The Today show talked about the complex issue.  A whopping 60% of women feel that their in-laws cause them long-term unhappiness and stress.  As a married woman, I can totally understand that one!  It can really take a toll on a marriage.  It’s really common to hear wives complain that their mother-in-laws compete for the man they share in their lives.  It really boils down to changing the parent-child relationship.  Parents have to learn to let go and respect the choice that their son or daughter has made.  It gets really sad when the situation affects the grandchildren.

I felt like the expert focused on the mother’s fear of losing her son to the “new woman” in his life.  She said that the best way to overcome this is to address that fear.  It also put some responsibility on husbands since they can help block criticism directed toward their wives and they can make an effort to show their wives affection in front of their parents.  This helps the wife feel secure.  I think that’s a good point.

They talked about many things – it got a little confusing but it was interesting.  I’m sure many married couples out there can relate!
