Recap & Discussion

Discussion Questions:

  • Could you picture Lorelai and Rory as old cat ladies?
  • Why is Lorelai avoiding calls from Emily?
  • Do you think Lane’s plan about getting Mrs. Kim to like Dave will work?
  • Are Lorelai and Rory Luke’s family on Thanksgiving?
  • Though the town is watching Rory and Jess, do you think it odd they are not angry by it (since they don’t like Jess)?
  • Why did Rory hide her backups from Lorelai?
  • Why does the thought of Yale upset Lorelai so much?
  • Why did Rory become more passionate with Jess?
  • Do you expect Dean to challenge Jess to a fight later, or simply to cause trouble for him?

Gilmore Girls Episode Recap & Photos:

Big and Little Edie Beale are on tv, a documentary – memorable, cool, free. This mother and daughter, related to the Kennedy’s, later lived with many cats and raccoons. The future for Lorelai and Rory? Disturbing thought.

Sookie is freaking at her kitchen staff – she is afraid of leaving them alone to do Thanksgiving dinner without her. She’s worried, because her name will still be associated with the dinner, but she has no control over it. If it’s bad, it reflects on her. Sookie says hi to Emily, but Lorelai doesn’t believe she’s there in the kitchen.

Emily is confronting Lorelai for avoiding them for two weeks – avoiding calls, missing dinners. Emily wants Lorelai to come to Thanksgiving dinner the next night. And won’t take no for an answer, even though Lorelai and Rory already have plans. Emily says they are going out of town for over a month, so it’s the last time to be together.

Rory asks what her Chilton friends are doing for Thanksgiving. Louise is visiting her dad in jail. Paris is frustrated because no homeless shelter needs volunteers (good on the resume). Madeline is sending college applications to back-up schools.

Rory reminds Lorelai that they now have 4 Thanksgiving dinners to go to: Lane’s, Sookie’s, Luke’s and now the Gilmore’s. Lorelai thinks they can skip Luke’s, that he won’t care. Kirk has come out of ‘Le Chat Club’ with supplies for his new cat, whom he has named after himself. To eliminate confusion with his mom, they will now be Cat Kirk and Human Kirk.

Rory and Lorelai break it to Luke that they can’t make his dinner. They are surprised that he looked disappointed. So Lorelai pretends to get a call that re-organizes their day so that they can make it to his dinner. Luke doesn’t want it to be a hassle, but they insist on coming. Lorelai says they have been training for their destiny of 4 Thanksgiving dinners. They will get gold medals for eating.

Thanksgiving day and they are picking out flowers for all the dinners. Jess comes to kiss Rory (in front of Doose’s). Rory drags Jess away from the window then resumes. Rory doesn’t want to flaunt it in front of Dean, though Jess does. He agrees to wait about kissing Rory so publicly until she feels comfortable.

Cat Kirk has been mauling Human Kirk. Quite a weird and temperamental cat. And Kirk is not sure if its a boy or girl. Lorelai runs into Dean and tries to make small talk, but he’s uncomfortable. Lorelai talks to him, saying she doesn’t want to avoid him, and he doesn’t need to avoid her.

The Kim’s are first for Thanksgiving. Dave is there playing guitar; Lane says he’s a Christian guitar player they met innocently at the dance marathon. Good cover. Lane is laying the groundwork for Mrs. Kim to like Dave, to make dating easier. Lorelai grabs some tofurky, and napkins in which to dispose of it. Mrs. Kim watches her too closely, though, and she has to eat it.

Onto Sookie’s, where Jackson has decided to deep fry their turkey. Sookie’s organic turkey. Jackson’s testosterone is flaring. Poor Sookie is distraught.

Next is Luke’s. Dispute over where to put the flowers. Kirk is scratched over 60% of his body. Lorelai and Rory share a table with Luke and Jess. Luke pretends he wasn’t waiting to eat with them. Aw! Lorelai comments on the lame kiss between Jess and Rory – Rory says she feels like everyone is watching them. Rory didn’t consider that Dean would move on too.

Onto the more formal dinner at the Gilmore house. Lorelai’s wit impresses the guests. Richard ceremonially cuts the first slice of turkey, before the staff does the rest. The conversation turns to college applications and back-up schools. They ask about Rory’s back-up schools – Rory surprises Lorelai when she says she also applied to Yale and other schools. Lorelai gets angry about Yale and accuses Richard of forcing Rory’s hand. Refuses to believe Rory made her own decision. Lorelai says Rory is ‘mimicking’ her parents. Leaves the table.

Emily comes to talk with Lorelai, who is exasperated. Thinks Lorelai hates them – won’t let Rory have anything connected with her grandparents, even at Rory’s choosing.

Mrs. Kim thanks Dave for his time and gives him leftovers too. Dave leaves his Bible behind, so Lane returns it (Mrs. Kim first checks that it belongs to Dave). Lane apologizes to him for the night – 5 hours, no break, and the whole charade. He’s fine. Even has other jobs from the flyer. He’ll put the money to their date – Lane is surprised he still wants to date her. Dave kisses Lane. Lane looks like she’s going to melt.

Lorelai admits to Rory she gets a bad feeling when her parents interfere, though she knows Rory will do great at any school. Jackson is busy deep frying everything in sight. Sookie is drunk. Which is a good way to deal with the chaos on her lawn. Lane pages Rory with "Bible kiss Bible."

Rory and Lorelai stop by Luke’s. Rory gives Jess a more passionate kiss before going into the diner. Jess takes out the garbage – Dean is standing right there. He saw the kiss. Dean tries to taunt Jess into fighting him. Jess knows that if he fights Dean, Rory will think it’s his fault. Dean blocks Jess – says its his town and he’s not hiding. And he doesn’t have to be calm around Jess anymore.

Lorelai and Rory ask Luke for rolls – not full yet. They left the Gilmore dinner early. They walk home. Pass Kirk sleeping in the gazebo.

One of my favorite Kirk episodes EVER! (My actual favorite being the one where he plays Jesus in the festival of living art.) I love the cat kirk and human kirk bit. So cute!!! I also loved how sad Luke looked when Lorelai cancelled Thanksgiving with him. I hate when Lorelai and Rory fight, but they ended this one very nicely, I think.
