I think Lorelai was not comfortable with flaunting her marriage to Chris because deep inside she knew she rushed into it and not completely committed to Chris. That was also why she didn’t want a big party. Her marriage to Chris wasn’t a huge deal.
Chris needed to talk to Lorelai about donating the money because he didn’t realize that the knitathon was the important part not the whole money.

I liked how Luke’s feelings were shown when he sees Lorelai & Chris walking through the Square and gets grumpy at all the knitters in his diner. This suttle emotion keeps the Lorelai / Luke dynamic alive, just.
