Gilmore Girls Recap: 7.09 “Knit, People, Knit”

Episode Name: "Knit, People, Knit"
Episode Number: 7.09
Air Date: November 28, 2006

Chris and Lorelai are at dinner with Richard and Emily and Rory. A whole big Gilmore (and Hayden) bunch. Richard is saying Cheers to the marriage. Ooh, and there’s a wedding gift. What, not a house this time around?

So, what’s in the gift? Looks like a picture frame. It’s an etching by KiKi Smith. Called "Wolf Girl." Oy, it’s so ugly!

Emily chastises Lorelai for not registering. And therefore for eloping. And for telling them about the marriage on the answering machine! Ok, that was indeed rude. Feud or no feud. lol, Emily saved the message. "Uh, we just ended up getting married. So, anyway, bye" – yeah, so bad.

Dinner now. Lamp flown in from New Zealand.

Emily bursts out and says she wants to throw Lorelai and Christopher a wedding party. That it’s their social obligation. After all, what would people think if they didn’t have a party? That they were ashamed? True, I think it’s great to celebrate the marriage. But I would call an Emily party an obligation not a celebration.

Emily tries to get Rory on her side. And Rory agrees it would be nice to celebrate the wedding. So does Christopher. So Lorelai caves in. Emily then asks for her guest list, and Lorelai limits it only to Sookie, Michel, Jackson and Logan as friends. She doesn’t want to invite Stars Hollow people. Why do you think that is?

Rory is moving into Paris’ place. All the boxes, what about all the furniture she owns from her grandparents? Ok, I love Paris. Having Rory sign a sublet agreement, and even have Logan agree to pay for utilities that he uses. Hilarious.

Logan invites Rory out to one of his shmooze parties, but Rory can’t. It’s Lucy’s 21st birthday – a 2002 party. Do you think either will go to the others’ party? And a 2002 party sounds interesting.

Lorelai knitting?!? Now that’s a picture of home contentedness. She’s "knitting just to knit" – training for the knitathon - so she’s just randomly knitting to practice. The knitathon is to replace their bridge – a beautiful and lovely Old Muddy River bridge that is so beautiful because they made it with a wood that beetles just love.

Lorelai wants to get non-slippery knitting needles. Chris offers to come but Lorelai tells him to stay home. Wants to give Stars Hollow folks time to adjust. To ease people into their marriage. Cause it was sudden and not the guy the town expected. Doesn’t want to shove the marriage down their throats or flaunting it – hence why they were not invited to the marriage.

So, Lorelai agrees to let him come along with her today. To stroll with her, not to strut ;)

Luke’s diner. TJ comes in asking for a carbonated drink. So, what the hell is TJ doing there? He’s freaking out that Liz wants to do a home birth. Anyway, TJ is asking Luke to come when Liz’s water breaks – Liz wants family there for the birth.

Luke sees Lorelai and Christopher "strutting" down the street. And then decrees that the Diner is a "knit free zone", because there is thread just everywhere and he’s flustered. Poor Luke.

Knitathon!! Oooh, I want the big ball of pink thread! They are just prepping for the event, lots of moving stuff and knitting practice. Babette congratulates Lorelai and Chris on the elopement. But her "congratulation" is a snide comment that weddings are special and they should have had one.

Miss Patty brings over the Stars Hollow Welcome Wagon, in a real wagon, as congratulations for the wedding. Miss Patty doesn’t seem to like Chris. Calling him worldly. Being cold. Despite how nice Chris is being to everyone. He seems to be really enjoying the small town life.

Rory comes over to Lucy & Olivia’s to drop off stuff for the party, but only Marty is there. He’s being really cold to Rory. Thankfully Rory and Lucy come over. Wow, all three of them have Uggs. Lots of Lucy and Marty, aka "boyfriend" smooching.

Anna comes to thank Luke for taking care of April. Then asks to talk in private. Anna mentions how tough it is to take care of her mom, who needs round-the-clock nursing. Luke offers to take care of April any time. Then Anna breaks that Anna and April are moving to New Mexico. They are going ASAP. Luke looks crestfallen. It’s just one blow after another for him. But he does understand the difficulties of taking care of an ailing parent.

Sookie is making theme food for the Knitathon. She started with piles of pasta with breadsticks in them. Lorelai mentioned how "cordial" people were to Chris. And that this was creepy. Neither Babette nor Miss Patty pinched his butt. True, they are funky folk and there was no funk. Lorelai then rants about how it’s not fair to her that people are not supporting the Lorelai & Chris thing, especially Sookie.

Lorelai asks Sookie to help turn around the town. To "campaign." Sookie suggests that Chris walk Paul Anka. Lorelai says Jackson and Chris should do something since Jackson has "clout." They decide the men should go for a beer. Nice and public.

Luke is trying to cheer up April about moving to New Mexico. April is miserable about having to move. Losing all her friends. She’s worried she’ll just be "that weird dorky loser girl" all over again.

Paris doesn’t understand the 2002 theme. Doesn’t seem it has much explanation. Whoa, that’s one major knitting spool. Lorelai is asking Rory to pledge for $30 for the knitathon. And, in the background, Paris and Doyle practicing their dance moves for the 2002 party. Rory vents about Marty to Lorelai. Lorelai says Marty is still upset about being dumped. Rory hates having to be the bigger person.

Lorelai tells Chris not to wear a black shirt on his "man date." That it’s too sophisticated and fitted. Too good looking. Lorelai tries to convince Chris that this is a big deal to impress town. Explains that their Welcome Wagon was more of a Tolerance Wagon. That they got no whittled statues or baked goods. They got cleaning supplies.

Jackson and Chris on their man date. Yeah, Chris looks better. More casual and in line with the rest of the crew. They try to talk beer, but fail. So Chris moves to asking Jackson about his farm. But Jackson doesn’t do well with Chris’ joke about his "other eggplant guy." So, Jackson transitions to Lorelai. Again, uncomfortable silence. So Jackson talks about having to "commit 100% to farming" – a huge responsibility. Yeah, it’s totally a comment on Lorelai – that Lorelai is the "farm."

Luke and Anna talking again. Luke is worried about how upset April is. Luke suggests not moving April during the middle of the school year. Staying with Luke to finish the year. Anna says no. Then later flips out at Luke about April being able to visit Stars Hollow. That it’s her decision to make, not his.

TJ calls Luke and there is a lot of screaming. But good screaming. In control screaming. Baby time!

Knitathon time people! Ooh, I want to live in Stars Hollow! Kirk is giving away free needles. Chris confirms to Jackson that they have plans – so I guess Jackson vented and they got along after.

Kirk counts down the seconds to begin knitting while Taylor tries to give a speech under time. And it’s knitting all over the place. My goodness.

2002 party. Lucy is nervous about meeting Paris, her idol. That’s so funny. Rory decides to go confront Marty, who’s tending bar. He tells her she’s being put in an uncomfortable position and he apologizes. And drops his cold-guy-dude and returns to being the old lovable Marty. Well, there is Paris and Doyle hitting up the dance floor. Not bad!

Aw, the baby!! Liz and TJ want to name her Doola. What a name. TJ passes the baby over to Luke. Luke is just crooning, loving the baby. Then TJ slips about April being a great Aunt, babysitting Doola all the time. That upsets Luke. He’s losing his baby!

Folks are getting tired of knitting. Kind of cold outside to be knitting. To get them all out of the cold, Chris donates the remaining $7,800 to meet their $10,000 bridge goal. The knitathon has reached its goal. Yet the town is unhappy. They may not like their bad decisions and the cold, but they enjoy the time the spend complaining about it all, and being stupid together. They feel let down. And all leave mad at Christopher, instead of happy. After all, their festival was cut short by 7 hours, and they love their festivals in Stars Hollow!

Rory and Olivia wonder how Lucy is still dancing with all that tequila in her tummy. Then Rory is left alone on the couch – until Marty comes over. The bar is out of booze. Rory reminisces about the naked Marty night. That was quite the night. Marty says he’s more beefed up now – and that Rory is more beautiful than ever. That was an "I love you" look from Marty. Rory reminds Marty that he should be out dancing with Lucy.

Chris doesn’t understand. Lorelai says the point was not just to save the bridge, but to save the bridge with knitting. A whole town accomplishment. Lorelai chastises Chris for trying too hard, yet Chris dropping money is easier than going around with half the town. Chris says people in the town will like him because he loves Lorelai. Just takes time.

Luke drives over to see Anna. He knows that April is not there. He tells Anna how much he knows about April and all her friends. He rants about April being "his" daughter too. Him not seeing April was Anna’s choice, not Luke’s. He missed out on all of that time. And he won’t let that happen again. Luke says he won’t let Anna treat him this way, that decisions on April have to be made together. And he will fight Anna for his rights as a father if he has to. Good for you Luke! No more standing by – grab what you want!

hey all! im from the philippines and season 7 is not yet launched here, but i’vebeen a fan since first season. i’ve heard a lot of bad reviews about this season and reading your comments confirmed those news for me. i hope i wont be as disappointed when it does air over here.

Question: In the last podcast, you said that the story line on Gilmore Girls with Chris sulking and Luke helping Emily while Richard is sick has been “tweaked.” Does that also mean that Lorelai’s resulting epiphany about the two men has also changed?— Katie
Ausiello: Turns out it was just a minor “tweaking.” The story plays out the same way, with Luke running errands for Emily and Chris throwing a pity party for himself. But it’s my understanding that Lorelai’s epiphany will be more gradual. The end result, of course, will be the same: Luke in, Christopher out. Speaking of Episode 13, in a Gilmore first, nearly the entire hour will take place in the hospital. I hear there’s some great Lorelai/Emily stuff. It’s about damn time.

i just read the recap again and saw the comment about not a house this time around. why? yes c adn l eloped maybe e and r will get them a house and that will push lorelai over the top.

DR is a steady hard L&L fan at this rate there is no such thing as a season 8. the show still needs to get back on track. if season 8 would be about L&L rebuilding turst, confidence and security with each other and the season ending with their marriage (finnay), or a kid (finnaly) i would be thrilled but it would not be a true gg ending.

  7. By em

    thanks Tara Ashely!

i wonder what the “tweak’ is??

  8. By Tara Ashley

MA: But I know a couple of weeks ago in Ask Ausiello, I had said that a big source of the conflict was gonna come up when Richard gets sick. And uh, Luke is gonna be the one who steps up and helps Emily out, while Christopher just kinda sulks off to the side because he had a fight with Lorelai. Those plans, however, have since changed.
    DM: How come?
MA: I don’t know. I just know that they’re tweaking that whole story. I don’t really know what’s happening now, so uhh—

  9. By em

oh, and rosenthal even admitted that he thinks that luke and lorelai are soul mates, so i wouldnt worry!

    LL FAN FOREVER!!!

  10. By em

Tara Ashely, can you possibly tell me about what they said in the TVGuide podcast because i have absolutley no patience and i cant wait for them to stop talking about veronica mars and for them to start talking about gilmore girls. so PLEASE!!

and you do not have your head stuck in a i-miss-luke-and-lorelai cloud. rosenthal definitely is effected by what we say. and i highly doubt that he would end the season with chris and lorelai still together. i asked ausiello if he could tell us anything about how LL get back together, but he didnt answer. now, at first, it seems like that doesnt say anything, but doesnt that kind of say that the marriage wont last?? and please let there be another season!!

  11. By Tara Ashley

I’m feeling a little better about that tidbit now, after having read people’s specs. Is it possible that maybe they’re extending the C&L thing because they’re anticipating an 8th season? Or, is it possible that they are really going to stick with C&L and ease L&L out completely? That can’t be it, right? I mean, they wouldn’t have all these uncertain-Lorelai scenes if the marraige is meant to last…would they? And the backlash from L&L fans has to have had SOME effect on Rosenthal- he has to know that ending the season with C&L still together is really not what anyone wants or thinks is true to GG. Or sdo I just think that because my head is stuck in a I-miss-Luke-and-Lorelai cloud?

I think it’s also possible that MA never really had confirmation on this spoiler and is trying to backtrack.

I’m sick in bed with a bad cold, so that’s why I’m posting on a Friday night :)

NEW – TVGuide Podcast – Dec 01, 2006 – “The Richard being sick SL with Luke and Chris has been “tweaked” – “future kids for Chris and Lorelai may not play a part in the break up” – transcript thanks to lorelaisgirl@FanForum

Sad…..someone reassure me that this “tweak” will be to L&L’s benefit. Sad sad sad :(

  13. By em

i also definitley agree with you Rachel! this marriage, i think, is to show christopher, lorelai, AND luke who they really belong with (or who they thought they belong with but really dont
    *cough cough*CHRIS*cough cough*LORELAI*couch cough*

  14. By Tara Ashley

No, I agree with you Rachel!

  15. By Rachel

I am not saying that Lorelai can’t marry someone else just because Christopher is her high school sweethart and the father of her baby, I am just saying that it is believeable after Luke treated terribly last year, that she would go back to Christopher. I am not happy about it, but it is believeable. And I do think that the two had unfinished bussiness and it doesn’t hurt that after this marriage they will now know that it isn’t what they expected and imagined it to be and they will be more free to move on.

  16. By mollie

gilmoreisms strike again. with the whole bridg thing that is one great thing this season the witty coments. i liked the ones this episode especially. i liked the mandate that he was mandated to do. i also liked the bridge metaphor.

i agreee 101% with manu gg and tara ashley said about the whole highschool sweethearts aren’t meant to last always.

lorelai said it in the prodigal daughter returns during there little “no more secertes” thing ” i’m always going to have christopher in my life” that dosn’t matter he can be the father of your daughter, your highschool sweetheart AND you can still mary somone else whom you love and care for and they love and care for you and your kid. (not saying chris dosn’t care for the gilmore girls)

  17. By em

that is like that astrophysics thing! i love it!

  18. By Tara Ashley

    Love it!

  19. By DA

    One more quick thing:

Anybody catch Taylor’s speech about the bridge? “A bridge is not merely a feat of engineering and architecture, a bridge is also a metaphor… A meeting place between here and there, between past and future…”

Maybe Chris is just the bridge. Luke has been in Lorelai’s past, he’s always been there for her and cared for her. Luke is in her future, Chris is just the bridge to get there. Land ho!! :)
