Grey’s Anatomy Drama: Katherine Heigl vs. Isaiah Washington

I honestly thought the drama was over, but it just doesn’t want to die! Katherine Heigl was interviewed at the Golden Globes and was asked about Isaiah Washington’s comment, in which he’d said:

“No, I did not call (co-star) TR (Knight) a faggot,” Washington said. “Never happened, never happened.”

Katherine looked to be seething (while, you know, trying to keep her professional demeanor):

“I’m going to be really honest right now, he needs to just not speak in public. Period,” Heigl told Access Hollywood at a Golden Globe after-party. “I’m sorry, that did not need to be said. I’m not OK with it.”

Since then, much drama has ensued. GLAAD is demanding an apology from Isaiah Washington for his consistently homophobic remarks.

In a statement to TMZ, GLAAD President Neil Giuliano said, “When Isaiah Washington uses this kind of anti-gay slur – whether on set or in front of the press – it does more than create a hostile environment for his castmates and the crew of ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’ It also feeds a climate of hatred and intolerance that contributes to putting our community in harm’s way. Washington’s repeated use of it on-set and in the media is simply inexcusable.”

Already, Katherine Heigl has stated that she will not tolerate Washington’s insensitive comments, saying that T.R. is her best friend and she won’t let anyone hurt him.

I was very impressed with Katherine Heigl’s honesty during that Access Hollywood interview. It’s been clear to me over the past few months that Shonda and Co. have been trying hard to keep the drama at bay. The usual standard answers were given to the press like lines from a script, and it was such a relief to me to see Heigl speak honestly (especially at the risk of getting herself in trouble).

Washington’s comment was uncalled for. It’s almost as if he wants to keep bringing negative attention to himself. Perhaps he was missing his few days in the spotlight?

And through it all, denial shines through:

After making his comments in the press room, Washington came straight to Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush and Nancy O’Dell to explain.

“There is no way I could do anything so vile, and so horrible, not only to a castmate, but to a fellow human being,” he insisted.

When asked what spurred his comments on the October incident Washington told Bush, “It’s the truth. It did not happen. I was going to hire some other great shiny publicist, but you know what, God laid it on my heart to say it because it was so close. The reports were all wrong. It did not happen. I’m very disappointed that the New York Post actually wrote legitimately about something that was put in a tabloid about some angry person to get some validity to this, and then it just rippled.”

… and I still don’t think he’s going to get fired. Though I can’t even begin to imagine the drama behind-the-scenes at Grey’s Anatomy. If they turned it into a reality show it might just beat out American Idol.

What do you think about all this?

Well JCW your last comment was stupid as H%^&. The way you stated those ABC lets me know that around the house you a white man use the N word freely. I wish you think before you comment and get of TR’s D&%$ and be your own man and listen for a moment to someone elses point.

That comment about Black Women was stupid and you could never understand why we defend Isiah, Yeah he said something wrong but he said sorry and should be given another chance it is not like he called TR that to his face and beat him up TR should have step to Isiah like a man and told him then and there that it mad him mad and talked it out. They could have threw a few punches like men and eventually let it go.
But no he needs women to fight his battle the trouble two Katherine H. and Ellen Degeneous.

Uh…Cynthia – you didn’t have to “realize” you were straight because apparently you were or are and you were raised in a society where if you are straight, it is not a big issue.

No doubt there was an age when you became aware of having sexual feelings.

For gay people, they usually don’t “realize” they are gay until they come to that same age, even if perhaps they sensed something “different” about themselves before that point.

I think most people are not aware of having sexual feelings or inclinations until they’re about 11 or 12…

I hope that helps to explain it for you.

  3. By Cynthia

Then how come they don’t realize their gay until they’re like twelve!!! In most cases?? I didnt have to realize i was straight!

I JUST SAW A COMMENT ON HERE THAT SAID GAY PPL CHOOSE TO BE GAY! I DONT THINK SO, IM NOT GAY AND I DONT CLAIM TO KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT GAY PPL, BUT I THINK PPL WHO AREGAY ARE BORN THAT WAY. JUST MY OPINION, PLUS I HAVE HEARD THAT DOCTORS ACTUALLY THINK ITS A GENETICAL THING, LIKE GAY MEN ARE THAT WAY DUE TO MORE FEMANIN CHROMOSOMES THAN MASCULIN* CHROMOSOMES. AND VISE-VERSA. SO W/E GAY PPL ARE THE SAME AS EVERY ONE ELSE!!!

WELL THERE IS ALOT OF HOSTILITY ON THIS SUBJECT. I SAY DONT FIRE ISAIAH, AND IM NOT A HOMOPHOB. I JUST THINK HE DISERVES ANOTHER CHANCE, ITS NOT LIKE HE KILLED SOMEONE.

JCW did yo not go to public schooling when oyu were younger? You MST know that guys call each other those names all the time, not to express hatred towards homosexuals. It’s like saying, “You throw like a girl!” Does that mean he hates girls? He’s sexist? It’s male comradery. Grow a pair!

  7. By Susan

    Fire Washington. Period………………

I guess I hit a nerve. My last comment is under moderation. Okay, Hollywood is powerful. Who cares? I really do not. If you decide to not process my last statement. I will continue on other websites.

  9. By JCW

I only made that last comment to make a point in reponse to the comment prior.

    All this standing up for Isaiah as if;

    A) Someone on staff had called him a N*gger.

    B) He hadn’t called a co-worker a f*ggot
(No, not to his face, but behind his back and within his hearing)

    C) He hadn’t apologized for it, and then taken the apology back on National television using the exact same slur once again!

What does he have to do? Slur a black woman on television before some of you people see any wrong in his actions?

Isaiah “referred” to a cast member as a faggot in front of cast, crew and within hearing of said cast member.

Anyone who’s going to stand up for such behaviour and not condemn it has a problem.

This issue has nothing to do with the race of the individuals involved. However, the reaction of some people commenting DOES shed light on the attitude of a portion of the African American community towards gays, and my just explain where Isaiah gets his prejudice from.

Just for the record. I’m a married 54 year old Republican. With Straight sexual orientation. I’m also a Personnel Manager and know how many people has been fired in the work place for Mr. Washington’s behaviors. Physcial fighting is just cause enough to be fired. With the added offence of sexual harazement with 2 counts a person would also be terminated. Unfortunately it is all the Liberals who forced these laws into the work place. Business is Business and emotions and forgiveness are not part of the business world. The Industry that Mr. Washington is in is a business. I voiced my opinions as an experienced professional not a an emotional fan. People on this site are acting like Grey Anatomy is a religion instead of a show conducting business. Grow up and get the star dust out of your eyes. Washington should be fired for 1 count of physical contact with another employee and 2 counts of sexual harazement. Period, there I said it!

  12. By JCW

The only people standing up for Washington are those who are uneducated as to the damage hate speech causes in our society, and bigoted homphobes who sympathize with his point of view.
    Yeah! I said it!

  13. By Cynthia

Gibson and Richards both made remarks about the cultures they were talking about which shows that they might actually have some hatred towards those cultures. Do not sit on your high horses and act like you’ve never off-handedly called someone a fag or faggot. Washington was not going on and on about how they’re bad people, could be, or should be killed. So that’s what makes this situation different.
Also, Susan (especially), I am a person and I am pleased with Washington and I am sure that I am not the only one. If this is all it takes to write someone out of your book, I think you might need to learn some skills in forgiveness.
Besides, as in most cases, it’s almost always the people for the extreme solution that are the loudest about their opinions. So of course we’re getting more words and outrage about “Fire Washington, etc.” So we really do not have an accurate view about how all of the fans feel. It’s mostly the upset ones who are putting in their two cents. The only people mad at Washington are the over-emotional, overly-sensitive, and emotional immature people. Or they are gay, liberals, or democrats who just need something to complain about. Yeah, I said it!

do you remember guys a piece of white bond paper with a black mark on it?we people see and focus on the black mark and doesn’t bother to know what is the background. I think this is what is happening right now. we tend to see the mistakes of one person but the things that he do good is not given applause. i am a ga fanatic, i’m really bothered on what is happening right now. it is indeed a great show with great and talented actors. i like the chemistry of burke and george. and im thinking that it is ruined. pls give the two a chance to sort things out and settle their differences.
one more thing, the show tells about relationships. there are ups and downs there, but they still stick with each other. don’t you want to see it in real life? guys, let’s leave this to them. after all they are just HUMAN,they are like us.
let’s just enjoy what grey’s anatomy gives to us.
afterall it is a very entertaining show, with lots of lessons in life.

I’m glad to hear Mr. Washington is going to check into rehab. I didn’t know they had a rehab for homophobic’s.
That must be the new Hollywood fix. Gee, say stupid things and go to rehab and all’s forgiven. Well, Mr. Washington, Mr. Richards, Mr. Gibson, etc.. actions speak louded. Now do the right thing and be respectful. And, if you guys need a spiritual adviser instead of rehab, I’m available.

i love the show, and the characters on the show are amazing. i don’t think it’s acceptable for him to completely get away with it but Isaiah is a great actor and great looking. but thats neither here nor there. the fact of the matter is he has verbal diarrhea. everyone diserves another chance and Isaiah is no exception. i think he’s on the show for a reason, and to fire him b/c of his rude remarks would be disappointing. don’t get me wrong, im not against gay people or anything to that nature, in fact i was so shocked when T.R. came out, i mean he’s just so cute!!! and i think T.R. has the right to be pissed if he is. but i honestly believe in the saying ” Love Thy Neighbor”. i think they should all have a sit down and discuss the matter with the shows producers and all.

Cynthia, if Hollywood jobs are for the people wouldn’t you agree that it would be important to learn people pleasing skills? Or, social behaviors of the masses that are acceptable in the Hollywood work place. I don’t believe that just because your an actor you can be a social idiot. I am a forgiving person. I pity him because he obviously doesn’t know how to forgive himself and move on. I personally wouldn’t miss his character on Greys. They could get a much better actor with social skills to appease the viewers if they wanted to. Fire Washington!

  18. By Cynthia

The reason you can get away with this in Hollywood is because it is the people, the viewers, who keep their jobs afloat. As long as there are people who like them, they will get paid. There ARE people like myself who are pulling for Washington. Americans are forgiving and that’s a good quality to have.
Other jobs are different because they are more about the work that the employees do. Hollywood jobs are for the people.

  19. By Susan

Fire Washington….Why is it that Hollywood Stars get away with such behavior? And, in the political arena what the stars say is fact. Remember these were the geeks in the Drama classes in High School. Would you have applauded that behavior back then? Katherine Heigl didn’t have anything to do with Isaiah’s failure to be a kind person. So why is the issue stated as Katherine Heigl vs. Isaiah Washington.
Because she spoke the truth and refused to let him off the hook again…. Come on! The issue is Isaiah’s mouth. Let’s not change the facts and make it a Katherine issue. I’m insulted!!!

i also like JCW’s views they are very close to the way i feel
