This is probably what I would consider a rather big spoiler, of the spoilerish kind, so I’d stop reading right about now if you don’t want to know any more about what’s causing Izzie’s hallucinations.

Here goes.
According to new details revealed by Ausiello’s sources, the reason that Izzie is seeing Denny isn’t a brain tumor, but might as well be. In other words, when Shonda told us it wasn’t a brain tumor, she was simply being literal. It’s not a brain tumor, but it is a brain condition that’s affecting Izzie. As the sources put it, it’s “similar to an aneurysm.”
So I guess that answers that question.
The other question that rises out of this sort of answer is whether or not Rhimes meant for this to be terminal in order to give Heigl a permanent exit from the show. The answer, as it turns out, seems to be no. That Rhimes came up with this storyline in order to appease Heigl’s desires for a more Emmy-worthy storyline.
ABC seems to be walking a fine line between knowing the audience – for the most part – hates this storyline and not wanting to stomp all over Rhimes’ creative juices. Or something. “It’s definitely an unorthodox story, but I trust in Shonda,” maintains one suit. “If we interfere, we get blamed for messing with someone’s creative vision. If we don’t do anything, we get blamed for the backlash. You really can’t win.”
In reading between the lines of that statement I gather that ABC hates the storyline, they just don’t know what to do about it. And perhaps it’s just too late to do anything.
So now that you know what’s causing Izzie’s Denny-visions, how do you feel about it? Still terrible? Somewhat better?

i think the whole thing is stupid, they need to wrap it up soon. i think that when she finds out what it is, izzie (well, heigl) will most definately act the hell out of it and it will be amazing. but most of the reaction will be down to all izzies friends as well so they get a chance to show of their acting skills also. i still find it a bit worrying that the best ‘emmy-wothy’ storyline they could think of was a hallucinating-causing brain disease type thing for izzie. the whole sex with denny thing was just messed up.
I still hate the storyline but this explanation makes it a little less ludicrous, I guess.

So she is stealing a storyline for the TV show Eli Stone? Ok i get it. Don’t like it — Eli Stone still does it better. Much better.
As far as doing it because Heigl insulted the writer’s last season? I say since when do you get rewarded for bad behavior?
I think less of the writers and less of Heigl! And I still hate the storyline! AND I certainly don’t think it is Emmy material.

A few week’s ago someone mentioned that it seem like Shonda is steeling storylines from general hospital. And Izzie having a “brain condition” is another VERY similar storyline from one show to the other.
I still don’t understand why everyone cares so much about KH taking her self out of the running for the emmy’s. Let’s think back to season 4… it was seriously interrupted because of the writers strike, no show was able to achieve everything they wanted to last year and I don’t think that is anyone’s fault. It is not the writers or Heigl’s fault that story lines were cut and people were not able to get all the get material that they had in previous seasons. Now we are in to the next season and everyone is getting more and better material.
I do have to say I am not a huge fan of this storyline. I do think it is more suitable for a low budget soap opera and not a show like Grey’s.
I think this story line is amazing. It opens the door for so many dramatic situations to take place. How will Izzy react? Will she WANT treatment? How will she cope with losing denney a second time? What about Alex, how will he cope with have a second “crazy” girlfriend. Will he blame himself for not noticeing something was wrong for the second time? What about George? He used to be izzy’s best friend but they grew apart as a result of the breakup. will anybody think him a credible source in trying to convince people something is wrong? This is the perfect cure for what has started out to be a pretty boring season. Hopefully we will see more of george and Izzy now and less of meredith and christina’s “my life is so horrible lets bitch about it.”
I do, However, agree with Kira that it is very similar to a previous storyline. But that was also a very powerful storyline. The drama that ensued when that women though her boyfriend didn’t exist was heart wrenching, but she had a happy ending when it turned out he did, in fact exist. I think that so many storylines can be weaved from a similar thing happening to a main character, who finds out it was all just an illusion. I am very eager to see where shonda takes this!

Hallelujah! I’m glad that it is at least something reasonable and they aren’t going to kill her off. Like I’ve said before, there is enough story there with her having a brain thing. I imagine she will be conflicted to whether or not she will want to get it fixed because she’s so happy with denny. I can’t wait to see how it plays out

Who cares if Katie doesn’t get “Emmy worthy material”? Why can’t they spread it around? Why can’t Ellen get some? Why can’t Patrick or Justin? I thought he would get at least a nomination for his performance last season. Katie got her Emmy…why not give someone else a chance? I think that most of us were tired of this storyline after the first episode when he didn’t leave after the sweater was burned. I personally would love to see Patrick, Ellen, or Justin get some great material and even an Emmy.

Oh I love Denny…I loved Denny. If they wanted to keep him on the show, they should not have killed him off. That’s all.

The only good thing about this storyline is Jeffrey Dean Morgan. He’s the kind of amazing actor that can sell anything.
I think if you’ve ever loved someone so much you’d realize that these episodes with Denny and Izzy make you believe that the loved one is there with you at all times and to have him tell you he’s there ‘for you’ even if it is to tell you you’re sick, wouldn’t it be best to be told by the person that held your hand, loved you for you, and was your heart! I think you need to step back and look at the beauty of these two and the purity of their relationship! I love it and am very sad Denny is gone!

I am a die hard Grey’s fan and Izzy is my favorite character and I love Katherine as an actress I have loved Izzy sine she laid on the floor in her prom dress for three days My husband and I had just seperated at that exact time so I understood some what I am just glad she is not being killed off
