With 15-hour days, the Grey’s Anatomy actress admits that it’s not always easy to make the best decisions when it comes to diet and excercise. In this month’s Prevention, Heigl tells some of her secrets for staying slim and beautiful:
On-set temptations: Nourishment often consists of takeout tacos or greasy Chinese, supplemented by a buffet of junk food. She recently gave up doughnuts and is trying to do the same with cigarettes.
What she drinks: Though she was raised Mormon, she long ago renounced the religion’s prohibitions on caffeinated beverages — but she sticks to antioxidant-rich tea.
What she eats: She loves red meat and potatoes, but prefers grazing lightly all day, rather than three meals. Most fruits are hard on her stomach, but she’ll consume as much pineapple and kiwi as she can.
On portion control: “You need to trust your instincts,” she says. “Who has time to be measuring out portions — 20 percent this, 10 percent whatever?”
Her workout: Last year she bought an elliptical machine, and she tries to spend a half-hour on it three times a week. When she can’t face the contraption, she hikes around her neighborhood. “Walking lets me trick myself into thinking I’m not exercising,” she says.
