Guy Sebastian Inspired By Stax Soul

It worked a treat for Human Nature, but will rediscovering his soul roots pay off for Guy Sebastian? Australia’s original Idol recently visited the legendary Ardent Studios in Memphis to record his soul covers album.

While Human Nature tackled the sweet harmonies of Motown, Guy Sebastian’s record will cover the grittier recordings of Stax. Think Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Jackie Wilson, and other legends.

Guy’s enlisted a top team of talent to help him capture Stax’s sexy sound. Founding member of Booker T and the MGs, Steve Cropper, produced the album while his former bandmate Donald “Duck” Dunn lent his bass-playing prowess.

Fans can expect to hear some of these classic soul covers when Guy performs acoustic shows around the country. He plays the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel in Adelaide tonight before visiting Sydney, Canberra, and Melbourne.

He was only recording at Ardent for 4 days. They did it live to analogue and got 13 of the 15 tracks in one take. He was away for a while but doing other things as well – like some collaborations for his next originals album. I believe it will certainly pay off. Look for further information on this over the next month or so.

Thanks Vallan … I knew he’d been away for a while but I didn’t realise just how quickly the album came together. It just shows you how talented he is that he can produce quality recordings so quickly.

I’ve edited the article a bit to make it more accurate – thanks for your feedback!

On Guy’s website there is a video of Steve Cropper (Blues Brother’s fame) singing Guy’s praises saying how incredible his voice is and that Guy makes his mind boggle lol

The MGs are touring with Guy next year here in Australia… got my tickets to that too!!

The photo you have there is from his Closer to the Sun (his third classic Guy album). The Memphis Album is just flying out of the shops. Amazing SOUND, its LIVE IN THE STUDIO folks, a jam session caught and recorded, with none other than Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn, Lester Snell and Steve. Memphis is back with a bang!! And Guy is equal to the musicians. What an album *****
