Hayden Panettiere cries in her tribute at the Humane Society Awards

Hayden Panettiere could not hold back tears as the Humane Society honored her on March 29. The Heroes’ actress received the Gretchen Wyler Award, given to celebrities who bring attention to animal causes, in Hayden’s case, the plight of whales.

The audience – which included her parents and boyfriend Milo Ventimiglia – gave Hayden Panettiere a standing ovation as she received the award.

“As an actress, you always dream of getting awards like the Golden Globe award, but I never expected to get an award that is this special and important to me as this,” Hayden said through tears. “There are people who dedicate their entire lives to preserving the environment and defending animals, they are so much more deserving of something like this.”

Hayden is the second celebrity to be given the Wyler Award by the Humane Society of America.
