Henry or Gio Spoiler: "Ugly Betty's Moving, I'm Not"

Ugly Betty Henry Gio

It would appear that at least one piece of the Ugly Betty love triangle is settled. One of the actors who plays one of Betty’s star-crossed lovers Henry and Gio, has told TV Guide that he won’t be moving to New York:

“The show is moving, I am not,” he said at the SKYY Vodka screening for “Sex and the City” on May 29.

I’ll tell you which one in a minute, after a jump.

I wonder what this will mean for the show, considering the nastiness that happened in May in every corner of the Ugly Betty web universe. People chose sides, and drew some pretty hard lines. The Benry/Getty wars made the US presidential race look like a campfire rendition of Kum-ba-yah.

One side is going to be very disappointed (although I’m pretty sure Betty is going to be single when we catch up with her in September).

So, who isn’t moving to New York? Answer after the jump.

The person who said the above quote is Christopher Gorham.

I’m sorry, Benry fans. Certainly you knew this was coming, but I know the finality is still a shock. I’ll make a prediction, though: we haven’t seen the end of Henry. Something tells me he’ll pop up once or twice in season 3.

So, tell me what you think of this huge development. And y’all be nice. We still all love Ugly Betty, right?

“Personally I was drawn into UB becuse of they Henry/Betty storyline. And after waiting for the rest of season one for some kind of payoff for their relationship, there was none. There was just akward, awful relationship that only got worse, yup that’s what season two was. All my anticipation, all the buildup, for no payoff, and that ticks me off. Its like they think we can’t have some happiness for Benry fans for just one moment, nope.”

    ——————————————
But the Benry fans did have their moment in the sun – starting with “A League of Their Own”. That’s when Henry and Betty decided to go for it and date, despite the fact that it was a bad idea to begin with. Their short time as a couple may not have been without its bumps, but they did share sweet, happy moments together when they had the chance.

In general, you can’t completely expect that Betty will have a relationship WITHOUT bumps. (Even her new, fledgling romance with Gio isn’t without its problems. Hey – even her friendship with Daniel has it’s ups and downs.) It’s just not realistic for those things not to happen.

If there’s anything that I’m upset about in regards to a character, it’s how the writers are killing ALEXIS’ CHARACTER. With her, it’s so obvious that they aren’t even trying to make things work with her. To me, the Season Two Henry storyline seemed plausible and expected. (As Jace pointed out, Henry was never meant to be on the show for so long, so I knew that they were eventually going to get rid of him at some point.) As for the baby storyline? He lived with Charlie for a while, so the pregnancy thing isn’t out in left field at all. But with Alexis, it seems like the writers decided to give up and do whatever came to mind – make her nice one second and then evil the next. It’s almost as if she’s bipolar! To me, it’s more of a pity that she’s going to be gone. I’m sure that if they kept Alexis on, they could have found a way to make her individual storyline tie back to Betty…but they just gave up at the end.

Still, I’m not giving up on UB. No matter what, there’s still so much to look forward to. And I’m dying to see Betty’s story through to the end. She’s the reason that I started watching this show back in 2006, so for me, the message hasn’t been lost. After all, this show is about her, first and foremost.

Of course the show is the “Ugly Betty” show, not the “Henry” show–and that’s mainly why I’m upset. I’m upset for Betty. I’m angry that Betty has to go through two seasons of this for someone she truly loves, all that build up that Henry is the one (and I know some people disagree, but I think when they extended his character that is what the writers intended), and yet in the end it is all for nothing. If Christopher Gorham leaves as a cast regular all the effort Betty put into that relationship was for nothing, *and* all the effort Henry fans put into caring about Henry is for nothing. In the end, it seems to me both of the characters are being forced to settle for second best. For me, the message of the show is primarily about Betty realizing her career dreams, but those dreams have always been paralleled with her personal dreams as well. If she gives up on hope about dreaming about true love, how can I trust she won’t give up hope that she can become a magazine editor? Betty’s message for all the characters is to follow your dreams–they may not be perfect in real life, but you can still realize them and they are worth striving for. Even regardless of who a person ships, I want all of the good characters to realize their dreams. The message I get from abandoning Henry entirely is this: the good guy loses and gets kicked to the curb. Become more like Wilhemina at her worst if you want to win in the end.

There are people that are in important to Betty’s life that I think would ruin the show if they leave. For me, these people include her family, Daniel, and Henry. I also think the show would also be ruined if the contrasts of the Amanda, Wilhemina, and Marc crowd left. That isn’t to say other characters are great–I adore both Christina and Claire, they are some of my favorites, and other recurring characters like Kenny, Cliff, Suzuki St. Pierre are outstanding–but for me there is a core cast that makes the show special and makes Betty who she is through her interactions with them.

I think Henry gets along well and works well with the rest of the cast. He is one of the few characters unafraid of Wilhemina and willing to stand up to her. He is supportive of Daniel and there when both Daniel, Betty, and MODE needed him. He’s hilarious with Kenny. He’s close friends with Christina since last season. I loved his few scenes with Hilda and Justin this season. I think he has a lot of story outside of the romance with Betty and taking him out of the show at this point is a waste.

I expected Henry’s involvement this next season to be minimized, perhaps more like it was in “Burning Questions” or last season’s brilliant “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” I expected him to be there, though. The more I think about this, the more I realize how much of a betrayal this is. Seriously, for me this is the same as if they announced Michael Urie or Ana Ortiz was being axed. It’s not just the relationship. It’s the importance of the character to the show.

OMG…my sandwich guy is staying on the show? AHHHHH YAH!!!!!!!!
    lmao
well even if she does end up single, it’s cool. Just as long as Gio’s a regular or something.

But then what if it turns out that the baby really isnt Henry’s? Stuff like that happens all the time! ARGH…im like so…….axious to see the next season. I just got into UB in the past month..and I’ve been like obsessing over Getty since I started watching lol.
    oh well..we’ll see. :D

“If Christopher Gorham leaves as a cast regular all the effort Betty put into that relationship was for nothing, *and* all the effort Henry fans put into caring about Henry is for nothing.”

I don’t agree with this statement at all. The point of the Ugly Betty storyline is Betty’s personal growth.

Romantic relationships don’t always work out, but you learn and grow from them. We’ve only seen Betty in two serious romantic relationships so far–Walter and Henry. Both have run their course and it’s time for her to pick herself up, dust herself off, move on and continue to grow.

And just because she loved Henry, doesn’t necessarily mean that he is her “true” love or the person she’s destined to be with in the end. And as much as I loved Henry end of S1, I never saw him as being set up to be Betty’s endgame relationship. I think the whole purpose in being further written into the show was to show Betty it was okay to want more out of her relationship romantically. And now it’s time for her to learn that it’s also okay to be a little selfish in a relationship, too–your romantic desires are *just* *as* *important* as your partner’s. It’s not always about only making the other person happy, which is what we’ve seen Betty do for Henry in S2. Despite whatever it was she may have wanted to do, she usually relented to what woud make him comfortable or happy.

And heck, for all we know the creators may not even see Gio *OR* Daniel as the relationship we see her with in the end. This show isn’t about the ships at all–it’s about watching Betty grow and mature. And I for one can’t wait to see her land on her feet again in Season 3!

Happy that Henry isn’t getting to keep Betty, NOT happy that he’s off the show. I think Henry and Betty were important to each other’s growing and maturing, that sweet first love (I don’t count Walter, whom I don’t think Betty ever really loved). But for the grown-up, increasingly assured and adventurous Betty, Gio’s a better fit. I certainly think (and hope) they’ll have problems (else, where’s the story, where’s the journey?) but I hope they’ll turn out to be the love of each other’s life. That said, I do hope we’ll get a closure scene between Betty and Henry, that we’ll get to see their breakup, not just hear that it happened offstage. I’m one of those who always wanted to see a Henry-Amanda match-up, but I don’t see how they’d manage that now; the writers seem to have written him into a corner with the baby-mama story. So, in short, Henry losing Betty = GOOD, Henry off the show = BAD.

I’m late to chime in because I live overseas and just saw the season finale tonight. I’m Team Gio so I say YEAAA!!! I liked Henry, but I found him tiring. And he didn’t work hard enough for Betty’s sake letting baby momma manipulate him recently. It is time for beloved Betty to move on! And Gio is plain adorable.

I wish BOTH Gio and Henry would go. I wish they would finally remove Betty’s braces (what an event that would be. Ratings will soar!) Let her get a makeover and look like she does at the awards shows. She could walk into work and have everyone stunned and then Daniel and she should finally get together until she decides to dump him for Alex.

I used to LOVE this show. Now I can’t stand it.
Good for you CHRIS G if you chose to stay in CA for your family. You are way too good of an actor to be demeaned by this tacky role. You rocked in Jake 2.0, Odyssey 5 and should have won awards for “The Other Side of Heaven”. I suspect you have lots of offers. This show is on the way out, and I hope to see adorable America do more movies. She is brilliant.

Freddy and Henry are both toooo old for Betty.
If she finds a new, 20-something boyfriend, rather than the 30-something married daddies they now chose for her, maybe there is a chance the show will improve.

Freddy and Christopher are 30-something married daddies. Gio and Henry are 20 something single men, so I guess I didn’t see much of a problem, unless you mean if they hire and actor with less responsibilities these sudden changes won’t affect the show that much.

I mean that the actors don’t come across as 20-something. I think both C and F are ten years older in real life than America (23?), and it shows on the show. No biggie. I’m still sick of this show. Guess I missed some if Henry and Amanda are 1/2 something or other. Marc steals the show. How bout a spin-off? I think F and C are very good actors but it is time to play thirty year olds guys.

I guess I didn’t think they came across as that much older. I thought Gorham was in his twenties until I looked him up and Freddy use to (and often still does) get a lot of funny comments because of his baby face. And America/Betty are often pretty mature in my opinion, so I guess it all evened out for me. But it’s all about perception, I guess. I come from the 90210 days where you had people pushing 30 playing teenagers, so maybe my perception is clouded! LOL!

Gio is a bum? he’s an enterpreneur with dreams and he makes it happen. Just like Betty, he comes from Queens. Just like Betty he has dreams of his own and he actually makes it happen. He started as an employee of Mode in less than a year he put his own Deli Shop… he’s aiming to build “Gio’s Sandwich Depot” in the next five years. Just like Betty wants to own her own magazine.

So far Henry is only an accountant. Nothing wrong with that. That’s the eternal dilema of who makes more money… someone that has a business or someone that keeps a salary job. Well I am in the latter group. I am a professional… but most my rich friends are in the first group.
Hard to choose… I’d choose Gio over Henry for many other reasons than money. Henry is not rich. He had to find creative ways to collect money for Charlie’s pregnancy. If i wanted money I would go for Matt Hartley… his mommy and daddy can provide for enough Moola to last a lifetime.

“He’s Short and Fat”… that makes Betty…. what?

    I can’t argue against this argument. :)

But hey I’ll never stop saying: BRING BACK GIO. He was funny, He was passion and he was romance. His love for Betty, teaches viewers how a healthy relationship is supposed to be based on dreams, determination, unconditional love and passion. He’s a friend and a lover. He makes her cry and he makes her laugh. I definitely miss him and he should be back in season 4. With a longer hair, of course.
