HEROES 4.13/14 “Upon This Rock/Let It Bleed” Recap

HEROES 4.13 “Upon This Rock/Let It Bleed
Airdate January 4, 2009 (Monday, 8:00 pm)

Yey! HEROES is back! I have to say, tonight’s back to back episode was exactly what I needed to get back into HEROES mode after a long hiatus. Unfortunately, NBC didn’t release any images prior to the episode, so we’ll have to go all-text for this review.

NUP_136054_0098-heroes-405-hysterical-blindness-12-close Anyway, here’s what went down on HEROES in tonight’s back-to-back episodes!

  • After stealing the compass from her father’s bureau, Claire Bennet spent a weekend at the Carnival. Unfortunately, she wasn’t impressed by the strangeness of the Carnies, and having the replicating man stare and stalk her didn’t help make her feel at ease.
  • We have to give credit to Lydia for her clever suggestions that got Claire investigating Samuel.
  • Claire finds out that Samuel was using her father’s old files to gather people with abilities into the carnival, and her instincts immediately tell how dangerous that idea is. Claire also discovers that Samuel killed Joseph, and she finds the map to a plot of land that Samuel is eyeing, and . But once again, Samuel is one step ahead of everyone, and tells Claire how sorry he was to kill his brother but Joseph had sold them out to the government and Samuel only wants to protect his people.
  • Samuel convinces Emma that he gave her the cello and she can do greater things with her abilities – Emma can draw people toward her when she plays music. Samuel used Emma to lead him to someone who can make plants grow from bare ground. When Claire confronts Samuel about the map, Samuel shows her the where he plans to build a permanent settlement for his people.
  • NUP_137305_0599-heroes-412-the-fifth-stage-close  The news reports the death of Nathan Petrelli, who tragically died in a plane crash. In reality, Noah and Peter placed the dead body of Nathan and crashed landed the plane by remote. Nathan Petrelli was given a senator’s memorial service. Peter’s response to his brother’s death was to refuse to mourn his death. He tries to be heroic by stopping a gunman from killing, instead Peter got shot. Fortunately, Claire was around to transfer her healing powers to Peter and he got instantly healed. And then Peter makes a strange request – to get West (Claire’s old boyfriend) to meet with Peter. The next scene we see, Peter has the ability to fly. Maybe that’s how Peter wants to honor Nathan’s legacy.
  • There was that touching moment between Claire and Peter, played by former-couple Hayden Panettiere and Milo Ventimiglia, which I thought could have been awkward given their break-up, but instead came out collected. Kudos to the two actors!
  • After Hiro’s mind was scrambled, he begins talking in seemingly nonsense Star-Wars/Don Quixote/Batman comics language. Ando came to his rescue when the sidekick realized that Hiro was leaving them clues. Ando solves the mystery by finding out that Hiro wants to go to Riverdale Psychiatric hospital, where apparently Mohinder Suresh is kept.
  • Sylar is back, but he’s got some serious personal issues. For one, he can’t get himself to slice Samuel’s head. Sylar may still feel the need to “hunt” but he has become “impotent”! And does he still have self-image issues?! Apparently, Sylar fears dying alone, and having no one to love him. Yeah, I can’t believe that either. So Sylar asks Samuel for his help by letting the tattoos show him more. Guess who’s face turned up on Sylar’s arm? – CLAIRE. It’s back to the cheerleader.

Thanks for joining the poll. And don’t forget, HEROES returns to it 9:00 p.m. timeslot starting next week. Images: NBC/Trae Patton and Adam Taylor
