Okay, so hear me out before you start feverishly writing me some hate mail. This is a long post, but there’s lots to say and I need to get it out of my system, so here goes.
I liked Chris Sligh. In fact, I’m not even sure that I don’t still like him. I’m just confused. While he was still competing, I began to get a little annoyed by his refusal to take responsibility for his rhythm issues. His singing and the band’s playing were rarely unified. Rather than take the criticism and work to change it, he made excuses. Ugh. But I forgave him because something about his curly hair and pudgy frame made me want to root for him.
The alarm bells went off again when I read a post-Idol interview. When he got voted off, I was taken aback by the things he said. He said that he was glad he got kicked out of his Christian college because he wanted to leave and didn’t know how (I suggested transferring to another school, but I digress) and then he said it was cool that he got voted off American Idol because winning wasn’t actually his goal. HUH???
His post-Idol behavior is even stranger…
Chris Sligh versus Rickey??? Versus Ricky?

The first rumblings I heard was when I was over at Rickey.org and read his coverage of what I will call Chris Sligh’s “Blogger Scandal.” Anyone who reads Rickey’s blog knows he is a lovable, dedicated blogger who wouldn’t hurt a fly (that’s him with Sanjaya). When I heard that there was beef between him and Chris Sligh, I was more than a little intrigued. It turns out that after being voted off, Chris waged war on Ricky, a different blogger from idolforums who is known for having accurate spoilers on Top 24 finalists. Ricky (not Rickey) revealed that his source for some of the info was Chris Sligh. Chris, naturally, publicly denied this but mispelled Ricky’s name (adding an e to it) and Rickey got dragged in to the drama.
Chris Sligh Bashing Sanjaya and Other Accusations
On his blog, Chris said that he thought that Sanjaya was annoying and, in reference to Sanj making the top 24, Chris said that 23 other people had better voices and went on one of his long-winded little rants. He took it down but he wrote a long post explaining his other, “misinterpreted” long post. Whatever.
Chris spends a disproportionate amount of time refuted rumors about his bad behavior that he has read on sites like TMZ.com and Rickey.org (poor Rickey just can’t shake him). It’s amazing because there are many Idol cast-offs who have little scandals, but nothing like this. How many people could possibly be lying about him? There comes a point when you have to ask yourself if any of it is true. His April 15th post accuses Entertainment Weekly of misinterpreting everything as well. Apparently he had some negative things to say about the show and his “explanation” post actually makes it all look worse. It’s like 4000 words long so if you’re gonna read it, grab a snack.
Obsessions, Name Dropping and his “Celebrity” Status
If I were a former contestant on American Idol, I would definitely talk about it but there is a point where it gets ridiculous. Not only does he give a run-down of who he’s “best friends forever” (I’m not even joking) with from the show, he feels the need to give his opinion about everything Idol related.
He even goes into a long, detailed story about how and where the picture of Sanjaya’s mom with the bong got taken because someone reported that he actually turned it over to the tabloids. Okay. That’s interesting since he acknowledges that he wasn’t even there because he wasn’t invited (he claims this is because the other contestants knew he would not approve of the party’s activities). He then drops the names of Lynn and Alex from the Amazing Race as being guests at the party (saying that they had dropped by Adam Corolla’s show) and encourages people to email them so that they can tell the world that Chris wasn’t at the party. WHO CARES?!?!? Do you think Lynn and Alex really want to deal with that? Puh-leeze!
He has been writing about the Idol Tour recently and I cannot fault him there. I would write about it too. The problem is that the first time he talked about it, he gave some reasons why the tour would be cool and actually dropped Blake and Chris’ names in there as incentives (maybe to gain love from their fans???). In today’s entry he asks “If you’re a Chris Sligh fan, who else will you be supporting on the tour (sure you support everyone, right? But who will you cheer for the most besides me?)” Uh, why?
He’s also had to turn his comments off, several times, and now moderates every single one. Apparently, people were as curious as I am about some of the things he says. His May 6th entry actually is just one long freak out where he talks about people talking about him talking about people (yeah, figure that out). He brings more attention to himself by complaining about the gossip people spread about him gossiping. Wow.
My absolute favorite part of his blog is when he gives instructions on “How to Deal with Celebrities” because he apparently gets “mobbed” all the time. He has come up with a list of things you should not do when you run into a celebrity, like himself. Again, it’s a million words long so proceed with caution.
So that’s it. I’m done. I got it out of my system. I don’t know what to make of his behavior. I do think it’s a teeny bit weird and more than a little attention seeking but I just haven’t made my decision. Well, in the end, if this post comes off sounding like I hate Chris Sligh, I could always follow his example and say I’ve been “misunderstood” and “misinterpreted.” If it works for him, it should work for me, right? At the very least, he can thank me for traffic to his blog: http://frommymindtoyoureyes.blogspot.com/

Good morning Jeanne
I really didn’t know too much about the things you spoke about with Chris but it does sound strange, to say the least. He actually sounds a little bitter to me. He may say that he didn’t want to win, which I found really odd when I heard it the first time, but who really goes on the show with no intentions to win? Even Sanjaya thought he could win and tried. To me it sounded like he was trying to save face and act like it doesn’t really matter to him but it actually does bother him and he needs to come to terms with that with himself.
He seems to be grasping for attention and to put himself almost on “celebrity” status is absurd and dillusional! Let’s be real…Sanjaya has more celebrity Status than Chris…now who’s smoking what? LOL
Keep up the great posts Jeanne!
A’kyra,
I know what you mean. Who says they don’t want to win a competition that they went through so much to get in to? It just makes him seem a little dishonest or ingenuine. It does sound like he was trying to save face (like saying he wanted to get kicked out of school too). I can understand needing time to come to terms with things, but you don’t need to dedicate a whole public blog to it. I would be promoting his site if he was talking about his plans for the future and how being on Idol has helped him rather than dwelling on Idol stuff.
I cracked up when I read your commentary about his “celebrity” status. You’re so funny!
Seems quite arrogant. But I think I’d simply laugh at him.
Jeanne,
or ok maybe not therapy but he can sure use a slice or two of Melinda and Sajaya’s “humble” pie
ok maybe he doesn’t need anymore pie either
I’m for real about that “celebrity” status…lol He can’t really believe that can he? I mean yeah some folks in his home town may recognize him and congradulate him and all but ummm that’s not a “celebrity”, if anything he can call himself a “local icon” and that’s only b/c i don’t know anything lower than that
I also noticed in his blog that he said “silly reality tv show. Seriously, people…it’s a tv show.” That just tells me again that he is bitter…all of a sudden it’s just a silly reality show? Hahaha so why did he try out? See these are the kind of contestants that don’t deserve to be on the show. Why even try out if you don’t want to win and it’s just a silly show????
Point blank the man needs therapy
Arieanna, now that I’ve exorcised this demon from my soul, I can now begin to ignore him.
A’kyra, I loved that comment so much that I made everyone in my house listen to me read it. The pie thing was genius. I hadn’t noticed that he called it a silly reality tv show. Nice… Real mature.
Well, just goes to show that he didn’t diserve to be there. If he handles these type of situations like this, he definately does not diserve to be an American Idol. Of course, he wouldn’t care about that because “winning wasn’t exactly his goal”.
By the way, I couldn’t agree with you more, A’kyra.
No, you’re not the only one who thinks Chris Sligh is weird. He comes off very badly in his interviews:
The writers from E! News called him a “negaholic”. It’s an interesting piece and spot-on:

He is an extremely odd man with some obvious issues.
Good morning all
I hope everyone had a great Mother’s Day weekend!
Jeanne I’m glad you enjoy my comments. It seems that Chris has gotten out of control. If in fact he is or has leaked information, I think the producers regret having him on the show more than Sanjaya. I have so much more respect for Sanjaya than Chris now. And if Chris did leak that picture of Sanjaya’s mom and the bong, that is such a low blow and again shows us what kind of person he is. His bitter jealousy is slowly becoming psychotic. Now I understand the quote “It’s amazing the clarity that comes from psychotic jealousy” Hmmmm…yep that’s Chris! Gee do you think he reads this blog….oh I would love to hear from him…so many words for Mr. Pie face
Amanda,
Thanks for posting the link to that article. I found it again very interesting the things that drops out of his mouth. This part got me “Sligh revealed he was disheartened by a number of Idol things, from the hate mail, to the no-musical-instruments, no-original-songs rules…” I have never tried out for Idol nor do i want to b/c I know I can’t sing but even I know just from watching the show some of the rules especially the ones he complains about here. He definitely has some issues and inside of those issues, he has even more issues that he needs to deal with…lol…what a maroon!
My two children are huge Idol fans. They also post on the Idol Forums board. I was horrified when they reported that Chris Sligh had engaged the entire forum in a “blog war”. Apparently, these internet feuds were a frequent occurrence. He was calling the kids “dumbbutts” and “stupid” and generally ranting about tweens. It’s shocking that he would behave in this manner. I’m surprised that he has not been reprimanded by the AI staff. Isn’t this against the contract?
He seems to be very disturbed, even compulsive. My kids are usually excited about the AI tour, but now they are having second thoughts about attending. What an unpleasant man.
Amanda, those links were great. I’m so happy to have some sort of validation because he just seems really weird. It is pretty terrible to engage in a blog war on an Idol forum of any kind. He uses the word “dumbbutt” on his blog too. Ugh. I’m surprised he hasn’t had some sort of smack down from AI. I’ve heard a few people say that they might go to get a drink when Chris sings. His post-Idol behavior has really turned some people off.
A’kyra, I wondered the same thing. If he read this blog post, I’m sure I would have heard from him by now.
I totally agree with you – how was he disheartened to learn rules that every faithful Idol viewer knows? Weird… It’s too bad because he wasn’t too bad of a singer but I think his pride may have done him in in the end.
Jeanne you are right I think if Chris has a “career” problem down the road with his “celebrity” status and all, he brought it on himself. He is the “dumbbutt” here and he just doesn’t see it which actually makes this whole thing kind of comical. I have heard several people say that they will not be attending this year’s AI concert. It’s a shame but there has been so much controversy and scandal in this year’s season of AI.
Ok, what do you think of this? I just read something very interesting. This guy claims that Chris Sligh is NOT really the one writing in this particular blog (Chris-Sligh.info). He says “I would not write this blog if Chris wanted me to end it. I do it for him because I believe in him and his music. I don’t want more attention unless it helps him. ” I think this guys is a nut and has some issues. He writes about Chris as if he is in love with him. He goes on to say how he is “not aware of any uproar” when it comes to the attention “Chris” has gotten behind these blogs. When you read this tell me this guy doesn’t sound like he is obsessed with Sligh…Exhibit A -”He has had a supernal affect on me, and I can’t shake it now. I can’t offer cutting edge humor any more, so the uproar may die down, and I will probably return to oblivion.” WHAT???? This guy has ISSUES….He said “supernal”…eewwww there is nothing about Chris Sligh that says “1. being in or belonging to the heaven of divine beings; heavenly, celestial, or divine.
2. lofty; of more than earthly or human excellence, powers, etc.
3. being on high or in the sky or visible heavens. ”
How can this weirdo actually believe that??? He even went as far as saying that Chris was “the one to beat” even BEFORE AI????
Now HE needs Therapy…no doubt!
