This season on Saturday Night Live, it’s really starting to feel like Kristen Wiig is phoning it in. With her film career taking off (witness the new trailer for Bridesmaids that we posted today), Kristen’s stock of characters are starting to really feel repetitive and derivative. But we didn’t realize that one of her most popular characters was potentially nabbed from a children’s book.
As Wair Blaldorf points out, there’s a children’s book character called Ruby that looks an awful lot like Kristen Wiig’s Gilly. Compare the above image of Ruby with this pic of Kristen on SNL:
Here’s a paragraph from the book Ruby The Copycat by Peggy Rathmann:
“Ruby is a copycat! On the day Angela wears a red bow in her hair, Ruby returns from lunch with a red bow in her hair. When Angela wears a flowered sweater, Ruby returns from lunch wearing a flowered sweater. Ruby even copies Angela’s poem!”
Even if it was just inspiration for the character, it’s a little funny that SNL is copying a copy cat with this sketch. I’m pretty sure that a lot of Indian burns would be coming your way if you were caught doing that in elementary school.
