We know that Charlize Theron has great comedic timing — just look up her guest spot as Rita on Arrested Development – but who knew she could play an immature, possibly psychotic bitch so well? The first trailer for Jason Reitman‘s Young Adult is out: Charlize plays Mavis Gary, a divorced young-adult author who returns to her hometown to win back her high-school flame (Patrick Wilson) even though he’s married and a father. Like we said, she’s pretty unhinged.
Mavis is unapologetically manipulative and just a depressing human being. She drinks too much, lies to get what she wants, and probably is oblivious that anyone else has needs or desires that are more meaningful than her own. And yet, she’s a hoot. It helps that Charlie has Diablo Cody‘s words in her mouth, just as on Arrested Development she was working off Mitchell Hurwitz‘s script. But Charlize is a big part of it.
This may be because I haven’t seen a lot of her work and she’s played asshole role before, but this is the first time I’ve seen her play such an unabashed fuck-up. And that reversal makes me even more excited for the movie. (As long as there are no Juno-isms. Blech.)
