Jason Mraz: ‘I Was Bullied Quite A Bit In High School’

Jason Mraz has referred to his sexuality as “bisexually minded” and “awesome.”

The “I’m Yours” singer is an active supporter of gay rights and recently filmed a PSA alongside Daniel Radcliffe for the Trevor Project, an organization that provides a suicide preventiona helpline for lesbian, gay, transgender and bisexual youth.

“They invited me into it and when I found out about it I was incredibly touched that it is the lifeline for young people,” Jason told Crushable at a Monday’s Trevor Summer Gala in NYC. “When I was a young person I was bullied quite a bit in high school. My best friend also. He came out right after we graduated. I just thought that was the most courageous thing but where we grew up it wasn’t acceptable to be gay or lesbian. … “I grew up in Virginia. It wasn’t visible to us, any LGBT community, where we were from. If anything the material we saw was from church, saying, ‘You don’t have to go that way.’ You know what I’m saying? And it was very confusing.”

He continued, “I always tell people in your heart you know what you want to do, you know who you’re supposed to be. And the universe, god, whatever it is, wants you to be that.”

Jason, who surfs and farms avocados in his spare time, is now working on his fourth studio album.
