They make an odd couple, British pop R&B star Jay Sean and teen sensation Justin Bieber. But Jay told Crushable that the two got close while they were touring together this Christmas. “I love Bieber man. Bieber is my boy,” he said. “He’s just mad cool, and he’s got a lot of talent…A lot of the time people don’t get it when someone blows up so fast, but he’s talented and I’m a fan of his. It’s nice to see someone young and fresh and still just a kid.”
Like Justin, Jay got started in the music industry young himself. He was 19 when he got his first record deal, leaving behind his medical school studies to become a pop R&B star in the U.K. He’s currently working on his fourth studio album in Miami, but took time out to talk to Crushable about his work with the Second Annual Teens Making a Difference event in New York this Friday, how he tries to interact with his fans, and what advice he gave Justin Bieber — and his mom.
Tell us about Teens Making a Difference, which will benefit Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research. Why did you want to get involved?
I come from a medical background. I don’t know if a lot of people know this but, I actually studied to be a doctor for two and a half years. So anything medically related is something I’m always going to jump at. The reason I wanted to go into medicine in the first place is because I’ve always believed that you could make a positive difference through your work. To me, nothing can compete with dedicating your whole life to making things better. When my career changed to music, I always knew there were going to be opportunities to do good with my music or my fame, opportunities to make a difference. And I’ve always been drawn to paediatrics, and wanted to help children, so this for me made sense.
What made you leave medicine to pursue music?
One’s a passion, one’s a complete and utter creative passion, and the other was more of a realistic pursuit. You study hard, you work hard, you get good grades, you can get into medicine. Whereas the music and being a pop star for a living is almost a pretty far off dream, one that most people would never imagine would come true. So when it presented itself for me — I’m all about chasing your dreams — so when it came, I just jumped a the chance.
Why will you be doing at the event on Friday?
I’m going to be performing some songs for the kids, and also it’s a chance to really relate to them, to talk to them. I’m not a person who does a show and doesn’t even interact with the audience, doesn’t even have fun with them. I’m a people person and I’m very much into interacting with people whether it’s at my show or whether it’s people I work with. Whatever it is I like to get into it.
What’s your favorite way to interact with your fans?
My favorite way is live in concert. Of course, via Twitter and stuff like that, you can reach millions, but there’s something very impersonal in that. It’s still just a string of letters. And then it’s only 140 letters to say something. However, when you’re at your show, your personality can really come through. There’s nothing like a face to face interaction. So for me, that’s the only way that you can really still ever get to know somebody.
