Perhaps, someone was listening when people said that ever-so-slightly plus-sized beauty, Jordin Sparks, was not dressing well throughout the competition. She is also very tall (like you didn’t notice) so I am sure that finding well-fitting clothes can be a hassle. I have said in the past that I thought her clothing was frumpy and unflattering and voilĂ ! Presto chango – she looks like a gazillion bucks on the American Idol finale. What happened? Who is responsible for this change???
It turns out that designers, Mark Badgley and James Mischka felt compelled to dress her and they put her in one of their gorgeous Badgley Mischka gowns and tailored them specifically for her.
According to news sources, “Badgley, straight off the redeye flight back to New York from Los Angeles, said the collaboration took place within the last week – something that doesn’t happen with other celebrities. (Wow, a couple months on American Idol and she’s part of the elite “celebrities” circle!).
The design duo has dressed Kate Winslet and Jennifer Garner, and Sharon Stone starred in a recent ad campaign.
They were on a business trip on the West Coast, Badgley said, and his office happened to be discussing other business with News Corp.’s Fox network when it was mentioned in passing that Sparks needed a dress for the finale. (Uh-huh – just keep telling yourself this is true…someone just casually “mentioned” to a pair of clothing designers that Jordin needed a dress??? Puh-leeze!).
“James and I had been watching ‘Idol’ off and on through the years, and we started noticing Jordin a little earlier in the season,” Badgley said in an interview Thursday. “We had 100 dresses sent out from New York. We changed a couple, made one dress. We made jewelry, evening bags and shoes to match. She even wore our perfume.”
(On Tuesday night’s show, Sparks wore a black, beaded Badgley Mischka gown.)
Badgley said that as they went through the fitting process, they tried to keep in mind that Sparks is 17. They didn’t want to load her up with too much embellishment or make the dress too structured and serious.
“Personally, she responds to femininity. She liked dresses that were soft and flowing,” he said. “We wanted her to be comfortable and be able to move, but she wanted to be glamorous. We had to strike that chord.”
Badgley described Sparks as “a fun, sweet girl.”
“She was so fresh, and there was nothing jaded about her,” he said.
Viewers cast more than 74 million votes in making Sparks the winner over Blake Lewis.
The designers did their share of dialling.
“James told me he voted until his fingers were sore,” Badgley said.”
