Okay, quick review: Old Spice did this campaign with hottie Isaiah Mustafah, it blew up on the Internet, causing Isaiah and Old Spice to take to the ‘net themselves and start recording viral videos dedicated to random bloggers, celebrities, Twitter followers, etc. It was the best campaign of the last three weeks, hands down!
Now, Kenny Powers is a fictional character from the HBO show Eastbound and Down, which is about to start its 2nd season. He is played by Danny McBride. K-Swiss is an athletic sports apparel company that no one really cares about anymore. Last week, Kenny Powers was “signed” by K-Swiss, in what was taken to be a combined marketing stunt for both Eastbound and the clothing company (but mostly Eastbound, which has gotten major Internet cred for being awesome):
Which was great! Stop there! Except now there is another video out with the fake Kenny Powers endorsing the actual K-Swiss brand, and it looks so much like the Old Spice ads that the layers of self-reference it took some ad guy to come up with the idea is practically masturbatory.
So the lesson here? There is a fine line between being awesome and having Alyssa Milano hitting on your spokesguy, and masturbating. That’s it.
