A friend in Atlanta just texted me this news: AJ Jewell, Real Housewives of Atlanta cast member Kandi Buruss’s former fiancee (he was featured prominently in last night’s episode) was fatally injured tonight.
According to news reports, he suffered a severe head injury after being involved in a fight, was taken to the hospital and died. Kandi’s rep has confirmed the news. Kandi’s engagement to AJ was a major source of conflict between her and her mother, especially because AJ had six children. As of a few months ago, Kandi announced she had called the engagement off. She told Essence magazine that despite their breakup, she is the legal guardian of AJ’s twin 12 year old daughters. I’d like to send my condolences to Kandi and AJ’s families in this awful time.
Edit: Kandi has reacted to the news via her Twitter. She says: “I could never n a million years imagine this happening. please pray for AJ’s children. that’s who im the most concerned 4.” and then follows that up with “im just in one of those moods where i dont wanna talk, i dont wanna b held & told its gonna b ok. i just wanna cry myself 2 sleep, alone.”
So heartbreaking.
Update: An arrest has been made in the death of AJ. Frederick Richardson has been charged with voluntary manslaughter, via the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Kandi, I am so sorry for your loss.My fiance was killed just a few months ago. I know what you are going through. Despite the tragedy, understand God has a perfect plan for us and he will not allow death until it is our time. I still struggle with the loss, but I have to keep reminding myself of the above. I love you and remember to stay prayerful.

Kandi, my heart aches for you and all that loved and cared for AJ. Stay prayerful God will truely bring you through this. It will seem impossible death is something we don’t understand especially when its not expected. I am your sista in spirit and will keep you in my prayers. Wow! Khandi, I am praying for you and AJ’s family. It is sad that young black men are killed everyday due to senseless violence. People haven’t realized that God is the only one who has the right to take a life. I hope the guy who did this gets what he deserves. I only knew AJ from what I saw on RHWOA, but without question he was a father, son, brother, lover, and friend and his death comes to shock to us all. The pain that is inflicted on your family at this time can not be imagined. My heart and prayers go out to all those mourning AJ’s loss.

Very sad and tragic that this happens to the only cast member with class, decency, and talent. Poor Kandi! At least it happened “off season” so it can’t be exploited by Bravo and the rest of the “housewives.”

Such a waste of life. It is more sad when you have seen the person’s as we have seen and heard him speak. He seemed like a nice guy trying to secure a happy life with Khandi Gurl. I hope they ended their relationship on a good note as broken engagements can be quite painful. Thinking of the last words that one remembers can be haunting. If not Khandi…just know he knew your true heart and it is that of gold.
Remember that and your heart (because no matter what, I know you loved him)…will heel and the sun will shine again.

Kandi I would like to say that my heart goes out to you and his kids. Kandi this is the time to cast your cares upon the Lord because he really cares for you only he can help you threw this lost. My heart goes out to Kandi and and AJ’s children. she is the classiest housewife in the bunch. I read she went to her uncles’s funeral today so she has had a rough few. I am sure with the help of her family and her friends in time she will be okay. She does need time to grieve. They are in my prayers. Jameilla, sorry for your loss as well. Kandi, I was so saddened today to hear about AJ’s death. Watching the show you can’t help but start to relate to each one of the Housewives as if we were living your lives with you. I pray that each of his kids will take time to grieve and remember the good times they had with their father, and you will take your private time to grieve too and may God be with you during this difficult time.

To the family of the late Ashley AJ Jewell may God be with you in your time of bereavement.
