Katie Holmes spoke to PEOPLE after her performance in “All My Sons” on opening night and she was very, very excited.
“I was very, very excited. It was wonderful. I’m just glad to be a part of it. We had my whole family. Tom (Cruise’s) whole family. Friends flew in. It’s exciting!”
Opening night brought in some stars! Patricia Clarkson, Isabella Rossellini, Dennis Farina, Barbara Walters, Jada Pinkett-Smith and of course…Tom Cruise were all there to catch the play.
When asked how opening night was different than the previews, Katie said, “There was definitely a lot more energy. The whole cast, we all got there about an hour and a half early and we had gifts for each other and we were running up and down the steps. It felt like Christmas.”
What a fun night for the entire cast! You can see more pictures of Katie Holmes in All My Sons below. Stay tuned for reviews from the audience.

Tyler, as her husband, what did you expect Tom to say? That she should work on her voice projection? Believe me, this is not a naive comment it is a case of setting the bar too high so that Katie is seen to fail.
Lauren, I think people here were playing off of Tom’s comments. The question became, “is she really extraordinary, or is Tom just being Tom.”
BTW, Katie looks great and she does have very good chemistry with Patrick. And the whole cast. She must be very glad for all the support. Her hard work paid off finally.
Congragulations to Katie.
I am very happy for her. I am not surprised by some so called ‘fans’ who would like to put a negative spin on one of Katie’s best achievements. The previews did not indicate that she would be ‘out of this world’ why then would someone who follows Katie so closely that she has read all reviews expect the contrary? Katie is not Meryl Streep and she has never pretended to be.
From most reviews, she did a great job. Some critics set the bar so high for her and from most reviews negative and postive, she passed.
Well done Katie!
I saw it opening night. She did a great job I thought, but my husband agrees she screamed her lines a bit. But she was also a bit hyper, I think maybe due to the energy of it being opening night.
And Patrick Wilson, I have never known who that was…he is so cute and a great actor! And if I were Tommy I would curb that friendship, they did seem quite connected.
this “yelling” her lines does not surprise me. some people were born with the ability to naturally project their voices, and vocal coaching only improves that talent…KH unfortunately was not born with that particular gift. her voice needs miked and is more conducive to film work. again….my cousin saw her twice now and said she hung in there with the mainstay powerhouses but that she was unable to be heard in some parts of the “house” (theatre). there was a clip of performance on tv the other day and she was indeed yelling her lines…it did sound jarring just as the one critic wrote. she better watch or she may get nodes on her vocal cords….which would be a disaster for her if she hopes to continue on stage.
Sorry my mistake, it was Associated Press Review which said KH had a striking physical presence, not the ones I said above, sure did muddle that one up.
Thank you Dido.
spoiler alert: there are photos of tom and suri on justjared and gossip girls
I’m not sure about “tremendous” stage presence, but I felt Katie’s acting ability was definitely there. The voice projection just threw everything off… :\ Kinda sounded like she was yelling all her lines.
There was a review on AMS in NY Theatre mag or it may have been Broadway theatre mag, I’m not sure which one, it said that Katie had a tremendous physical presence on stage, and saidthat she played the role of Anne, well. I think its great to be able to to do film, tv, and theatre. I think it would be great if Tom and Katie made a movie together, not one where Katie is his love interest, but she’s in the movie in another role.
Julia Stiles has done a number of play in London, including OLEANA by David Mamet, so she is coming to NYC with experience (and decent reviews) under her belt.
Congraluation Katie, she look very happy on all pics.I like her hair
I don’t believe that anyone expected her to be fantastic(and I say that in a nice way) but I get the impression that she’s good and if all the critics can do is just concentrate on her voice projection, then she was probably more than good, this is her first play, good on her, she’s worked hard, although I do wander if she was brilliant, would they have told so, I don’t think so, people love being negative towards everything she and her husband do, all they have to do is breathe and its wrong. I liked what she said to People mag, she sounds sweet.
It is far different acting in front of a camera, but she can take some voice projection type lessons. I had thought her voice might have been too soft for this type of gig.
If she was Jane Doe she may not have been cast b/c her voice needs tremendous work. I noticed years ago that she speaks too quietly and on stage you need to master vocal projection. More work needs to be done on diaphramatic breathing.
Mary, I believe we’re all aware of that. Katie’s not the first or the last to be used in stunt casting. The bottom line is $$, not the acting.
Great job, Katie!! How fun to have your whole families and friends be with you on opening night! I’m sure all your new friendships and hardwork rise way above any critics review. We all know that you are very talented!
Why on earth did you expect grand reviews?
___________________________
Hi tyler,
I think you misunderstood me. I didn’t say I expected “grand reviews”. I said I’d HOPED for them for Katie’s sake. If the reviews had been better, her chances of moving forward in her career in a more challenging and interesting manner would have also been better. With the reviews as they stand, I’m think we may see more “Mad Money” types of films and more things like her TV performance on Eli Stone. Most film stars don’t choose to go back to TV that easily. They prefer film hands down. It’s higher profile and more respected in the industry. Even behind the scenes people such as myself and my husband prefer to do film. Neither he or I have done TV in 15 years. Film is just higher profile and looked at more favorably in the industry. That’s why you see all those TV stars trying desperately to make the leap to films!!
Katie’s casting in Eli Stone is stunt casting as well. The show is not a rating blockbuster and was in danger of cancellation. The producer, Greg Berlanti, admitted that he asked Katie to come aboard to hopefully up the numbers for the show.
I agree that Katie was essentially “stunt casting” in AMS as well, just a P. Diddy and Julia Roberts were in their respective shows. It’s what the Broadway producers do these days to get butts into seats. It’s a tough market out there. What ever it takes, and all that! Some fare very well in their roles, some don’t.
Have a really good weekend, tyler!
There have been many Broadway shows that have put actors with no stage experience whatsoever in their shows… …..
Julia Roberts in Three Days Of Rain
Sean Coombs (P Diddy) in Raisin In The Sun and more.
Coming soon to Broadway will be Julia Stiles.
Already here is Jeremy Piven from Entourage and so many others.
Coming soon to
