Katie Holmes spoke to PEOPLE after her performance in “All My Sons” on opening night and she was very, very excited.
“I was very, very excited. It was wonderful. I’m just glad to be a part of it. We had my whole family. Tom (Cruise’s) whole family. Friends flew in. It’s exciting!”
Opening night brought in some stars! Patricia Clarkson, Isabella Rossellini, Dennis Farina, Barbara Walters, Jada Pinkett-Smith and of course…Tom Cruise were all there to catch the play.
When asked how opening night was different than the previews, Katie said, “There was definitely a lot more energy. The whole cast, we all got there about an hour and a half early and we had gifts for each other and we were running up and down the steps. It felt like Christmas.”
What a fun night for the entire cast! You can see more pictures of Katie Holmes in All My Sons below. Stay tuned for reviews from the audience.

Charlotte Rose,
Are you serious? Why on earth did you expect grand reviews? This was obviously, as the WSJ put it, “stunt casting.” No producer in his right mind would put a beginner like Katie in a starring role except to bring in the bucks. All things considered, it could have ended up worse for her. At least some of the reviews pointed out that she’s a beginner and should be viewed as such.

LOL….
:) Have a nice day Charlotte.
Other New York newspaper reviews, try the Post (surprise) and Newsday.
from what I have read the reviews were mixed…..she did not shine brightly but she did not fail either…..
We cross posted, Mary!! So happy you’re not offended!! Have a good one!!
Jeepers!! Are you having a rough day today, Mary? I don’t mean that to be offensive in any way! I’m just surprised that you seem so upset today. It’s unlike you! I truly hope you’re OK!
I read all the reviews, Mary. WSJ, The Times, Daily News and everything else I could find online….which were many! I can assure you my “perspective” is just fine. :) Why you would assume it isn’t or that it’s skewed in some way is beyond me!
I’ll say it again, because there seems to be some confusion. I had hoped for better than “she did not embarrass herself” or “she held her own”. I was hoping for “stunning”, “a revelation” and other very positive reviews. Is that wrong? I know what producers and directors look for and I had hoped for extremely positive reviews which would lend themselves to better future roles for Katie. I’m just not so sure the reviews she did get will lend themselves to that. Please don’t think I’m saying Katie won’t have a career. That’s just silly! Of course she will, but the reality is I know what producers and directors look for and I was hoping for a little more of the positive and less of the “she didn’t embarrass herself”.
I’m not quite sure why we’re having this conversation as I only hoped for the best for our Katie. That’s what I want and that’s what I hoped for. I can’t state it any clearer than that.
Again, I hope you’re OK and I hope you have a really good day! :)
Wow……..wonky computer.
I meant to say …….Other Broadway critics as important as Brantley.
I’m not easily offended Charlotte Rose.
I wasn’t expecting stunning reviews seeing this was her first time on a Broadway stage. I am happy to see that the reviews note that she did not embarass herself and that she held her own.
I have read the negative and the positive…………It’s important to read both, one gets a better perspective that way.
By the way, there are other zbtiadway critics equally as important as Brantley.
I’m glad you have the review before you!! ;)
I also read Mr Brantley’s words toward the other actors, however I do believe we’re discussing Katie here, aren’t we? :)
Mary, all I said was that I had hoped for better reviews FOR KATIE. Reviews that would push her career to bigger and better places which I feel she deserves. I didn’t see as much of that as I would have liked. If that offends you for some odd reason, I’m sorry, but I’m simply looking at the reviews and stating my opinion.
That’s all.
I’m very aware of all that Mr. Brantley said………. I have the entire review before me.
He also criticizes the supporting actors and especially the actor who plays Katie’s brother(Christian Camargo)
Mr. Lithgow and Mr. Wilson fair better especially he says in their scenes with each other.
PS…Sorry, I can’t seem to get it together today! :)
That’s not all Mr. Brantley said and I think you know that Mary, but I give you points for always looking on the bright side! Let’s be fair here though! Again, I have no wish to list what he actually stated since it’s not very flattering, but I think we need to look at the reality of the situation and be honest that Katie didn’t receive the kind of reviews that prompt producers to rush out and hire her for her next gig. I really wanted to see stunning reviews. Unfortunately, that’s not what happened.
Have a really nice day!
Mary,
Several reviews were less than I had hoped for. I only mentioned the NY Times as one but I’m not going to prove my point by listing all of the negative reviews because I don’t think that’s fair to Katie’s fans. Who wants to read the negative stuff!
I’m glad you enjoyed the play, but as I said, I wished Katie had gotten more glowing reviews for her sake. The reality is producers look at certain reviews from respected critics. Not only is that common sense, it’s everyday practice. I had hoped for better. That’s just my opinion, just as your post is your opinion.
Don’t listen to the NY Times! It was a GREAT play!
Mr. Brantley in the NY Times doesn’t fault the actors……..He faults Mr. McBurney’s “high concept” approach. He says it falls into the limbo between intention and execution.
I saw the play and got the feeling that Mr. McBurney’s directing style for this very American play would be questioned.
I loved the play and the performances and found the direction quite interesting but not at all distracting. I think the approach was to put the focus on Miller’s words.
PS: Forgot to add…..
I really glad that Tom let her have the spotlight mostly to herself and didn’t make a big splash when he entered or left the theater or entering the after party. She deserves that. Right now, I think, right now, Katie (and adorable Suri) are the real stars of the family in terms of positive opinion by the public. I want it to stay that way for Katie’s sake and not have her dragged down by the negative opinion some people hold on Tom. Again, she deserves that.
Katie looks great in the pics. Good for her! I just wish, for her sake, the critics reviews had been better. Producers usually look at the NY Times review first and it’s really not good. I had hoped for better so that Katie would receive more offers. Let’s hope they look at ALL reviews and take Katie’s status as a neophyte to Broadway into consideration.
Congratulations to Katie and to the whole cast of All My Sons. I really want to see this play but I can’t. But at least I’m content viewing the pictures and reading reviews.
she looks great in these pics…..her hair piece looks perfect and allows her to look more feminine. her costume is great as well….very pretty dress that fits her well. she looks better on stage than she does in real life…perhaps b/c sh eis wearing clothing that fits her well! I know she did a great job….my cousin saw the play again and said it was fantastic1! The entire cast was wonderful….congrats to all…and Patrick Wilson looks so hot!! I hear they have tremendous chemistry on stage!!
Congrats Katie! You did it! What a dream come true. She looks very happy in these pics; she has every reason to be happy. She has the most amazing life. Look how she was discovered? What a breeze for her! Check out her after party pics! She looks stunning; love her outfit! Who could ever say she is not stick thin? Oh, I know…someone with an eating disorder!
