Alost everyone’s excited for the upcoming 2009 MTV Video Music Awards and to get us even more riled up and excited MTV has acquired Katy Perry and Taylor Swift to star in advertisements for the award shows. The theme of these promo videos is West Side Story. The singers are singing a changed up version of the musicals famous song “Tonight.” Taylor Swift sings the part of Maria in one video while Katy Perry plays the part of Anita in another one. Just a warning, both of the girls’ singing parts are not very good at all, however, it’s definitely a cool idea for promotion.
Perry said she’s a bit jealous of Taylor getting to be Maria. She says, "I play Anita. Although I know I should be playing Natalie Wood’s part, [which is being played by Taylor Swift], because I’ve got the big eyes and the brown hair. But everyone keeps telling me Anita is hotter, cooler and sluttier. So I can relate to that!"
She also spoke about her excitement of surprising viewers with her outfits, "I’m excited about that process, because you can wear all kinds of crazy things to the VMAs. It’s not like the other awards shows where you have to be popular and pretty and stuff. I’d come and look like a real-life cat if I wanted to … or just a strawberry."
Make sure to tune in on September 13th to see the 2009 Video Music Awards, hosted by Russell Brand at 9pm EST. Take a look at a behind-the-scenes of Katy’s promo video:

Taylor Swift said of doing the promo video, “My version of ‘Tonight’ was pretty theatrical, because I listened to the song and I heard the song and I’m just like, ‘There’s no way to do this and not play it up’. When we were in the studio recording, it I just kind of went all out — all show tunes. I am obsessed with Broadway, so I was pretty excited about getting to sing this song.”
