Tonight wasn’t the first time that Katy Perry‘s sported blue hair. Not by a long shot. But our immediate, knee-jerk reaction to her Grammys performance of “E.T.” and “Part of Me” was—someone’s channeling Lady Gaga.
And before you start, yes, I’m aware that it’s a pretty easy statement to make: At this point, Gaga’s become such a fashion icon that it’s difficult for another performer to introduce an original outfit that doesn’t seem derivate. On top of that, Katy’s proved pretty avant-garde in her style choices. And yet, the similarities between Katy’s Grammys look — a bright blue, straight-cut bob and black-and-blue metal bodysuit — and Gaga’s look in the “Marry the Night” music video are clear.
It’s especially noticeable because Gaga has been surprisingly quiet tonight. Although she’s clad in a typically odd outfit — full-body black mesh, including over her face, and a gold scepter — she didn’t command a lot of attention on the red carpet, and during the show so far she’s sat quietly in her seat. However, this .gif has started going around Tumblr, of what looks like Gaga photobombing Miranda Lambert while everyone’s applauding:
At left, that’s Gaga dyeing her hair in “Marry the Night”; the middle image is from summer 2011, the height of her turquoise-hair fascination. The last time we saw Katy with blue hair, it was a long, wavy wig for The Smurfs; this is very different. We’re not the only ones who noticed the possible homage: On Tumblr, heavymetalloverrrrr snarked, Wow, Katy Perry did a great Lady Gaga tribute! But there are other users who snapped back that Gaga herself has been accused of copying Madonna’s iconic looks.
Of course, it’s possible that Katy wasn’t trying to copy Gaga at all—or even that Gaga came up with the turquoise bob on her own, either. Tumblr user septons posted this photo of Tokyo-based DJ and singer Mademoiselle Yulia, whose outfit undoutbtedly matches Katy’s cyborg-like look:

Katy has had blue hair for at least a month now. And she’s worn pink and blue wigs, dyed her hair pink on a few occasions from what I recall, so I highly doubt she was trying to emulate Gaga in any way.

to me it kind of looks like she is trying to get out of the way of the shot. I think Gaga has been trying to get out of the lime light this year, probably because she’s going to drop a hell of a bomb of an album this year and will dominate as soon as the over rated Adele disappears which will be soon.
