Lauren Graham in “Guys and Dolls” – Fan Reviews

Lauren Graham Guys and Dolls BroadwayLauren Graham‘s production of Guys and Dolls opened last week on Broadway for previews.

Lauren Graham has the lead role of Miss Adelaide in Guys and Dolls, a musical comedy that involves Adelaide’s wish that her fiance Nathan (Oliver Platt) would finally commit to marrying her. The character has always been pegged as someone with impact charm and humor. And Lauren Graham delivers.

I have numerous accounts of Lauren’s performance from the early reviews! Laura comments that Lauren was “wonderful” and sweet, despite having a cold! RBG says Lauren got the loudest applause at the end, suggesting fans won’t be disappointed with the show. One fan shares this account:

“[Lauren Graham] was amazing, and I would tell you if she wasn’t. She sang beautifully and truly made all of her lines either funny or touching. The audience loved her and the whole musical. She co-stars with Oliver Platt and he has to refine his performance a bit before the official opening of the show…but Lauren was stellar. She looked terrific and really made the show!!”

And em gave a long account of seeing Guys and Dolls last week, saying that the entire cast, but especially Lauren, was amazing:

“Who the heck knew she could sing like that? She was amazing!! She has a set of lungs on her, really! It is an absolutely amazing show, and it was only their fifth show ever!”

em says that, like above, Oliver Platt could use a little extra work on loosening up. Hopefully he does before opening night. On all accounts, it sounds like the show won’t be a disappointment!! I really hope we see some Tony Awards nominations for Lauren & the production!

Guys and Dolls has its official opening night on March 1st at the Nederlander Theater. You can buy tickets here. If you go to the production, leave a comment or email me to tell me what you think – and if you’re lucky enough to get a photo of and/or with Lauren, do let me know so I can share it!

I was in California in May and when I heard Lauren Graham would act on Broadway I booked a stopover in New York. That was the best decision I could make: I was very fascinated. I liked the show, the stage design, the wonderful music and the actors. For me Lauren Graham was unbelievable good! I watched the original musicfilm an I would definitely say that she isn´t a worse Adelaide. To me she realized her own personality and although played the role very well! We were 4 people (only one Lauren Graham fan) and we all were very thrilled about the show and about Lauren – so I can´t attest the bad critics…

This show closing isn’t about the critics… Lauren Graham was the worst Adelaide ever. Hands down. Akward, didn’t act well on stage, she just stood there for her lines and simply tried to hard to put her touch on the part and forgot to act the part. It was awful. Luckily she wasn’t able to ruin the musical. Nicely Nicely, Major Sarah and Sky Masterson were just about the best I’ve seen; definitely the version of “Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat” was the best I’ve ever seen.

Went to see Guys and Dolls today and was so disappointed Lauren Graham was not there. She was the reason I went and it’s tough to pay for a ticket and not see the person you paid to see. Oh well…what can you do! The show was entertaining…

She’s supposed to be in every performance, but there are no guarantees. She can get sick or something. If that happens, you can exchange your ticket for another performance (assuming that there is a ticket available – it’s been selling out, and assuming that you can still be in New York).

It’s easy to meet her. You can just wait by the stage door after the show, or half an hour before it starts (that’s when the actors have to check in with the stage manager at the theater). Of course, on her way in, she may be in a hurry.

Hi! I’m from Austria and I’m thinking about heading over to NY just to see Lauren in Guys & Dolls… Is she playing in every single show?

And how big are my chances to meet her?

    Can anyone help me?

the singing was NOT amazing and the acting not the best maybe Lauren was nervous and all will get better from now on.
Even the singing in Because I said so was not that hot.
Maybe just maybe she’s getting too sure of herself after the sucess of GG

Just to add, that sadly, the critics WILL get the show closed.

Don’t know how they sleep at night.

I’m rather apalled that the critics have trashed this show so badly.

There is a HUGE gap between what the critics are saying and what the general public thinks!

I can only read both sides…………but I do believe the GP over the critics every time

I saw it on opening night! Every thing was AMAZING!! Oliver Platt, and lauren graham brought a wonderful touch to the whole show.Lights were fantastic, and singing was amazing. I don’t care what the New York Times says, they should try to do what the cast did, then review. I would have a laugh after that!

i love lauren graham as much as the next person, and adore gilmore girls. but i have to say i was very dissapointed with lauren’s performance. i thought her singing was horrible, her accent on and off, and even her acting which i had always admired her for seemed forced and fake. it made me very sad. i hope, for her sake, the reviewers will go easy tonight.

Saw the show last night, it was awesome! It was the last day considered a “preview.” Lauren owned her part and sang with a type of bravado that is usually reserved for opening night. If you are in NY – go see this show!

    Lauren Graham Interviews

[...] opening night scheduled for March 1st. As buzz is generated for the show, we can add to the great fan reviews I’ve shared with some new interviews with Lauren [...]

Saw it Friday night, no announcement before the show, just spectacular. Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat stole the show. Nicely did stupendous. Applause carried and lingered longer than they do in other shows consistently throughout the night. Great cast. Sitting at very top of mezzanine was no dissappointment, every scene lit up with enthusiasm and excitment–the lights that surrounded the stage certainly added to the razzle-dazzle. The Big Band sits behind the four story high projector that helps transition the scenes with the added props in front. After the show the cast exited a feeding frenzy for autographs and pictures on the side. Best show Ive ever seen, including Gypsy with Patty Lapont (SP?) (Although I hear South Pacific still just barely takes cake, Ill find out Friday). Recommended to any and all–Great show.

    cant wait for this !

Before someone tells me, “Xanadua” is a typo. I can spell. I just can’t type!

  16. By Adam

I saw it last night, and Lauren’s the best thing in the show. Yes, she really can sing. Everybody else was disappointing. And Mary Testa (“Xanadua”) is wasted in a very small part.

The production is actually not very good. It looks more like an Encores! staged reading. (If you’re not from New York, Encores! is a three-times a year event at City Center. They select three golden-age shows to revive and each gets just 5 productions. For union reasons, the actors have to have their books in hand, and there are minimal sets.) At $126 a ticket, people expect more. Although the show is close to sold out right now, it’s mostly tourists. Last night, almost the entire theater was English high schoolers. It turns out they weren’t together! It’s just that they have off from school this week.

Yes, but everybody ends up in New York? (Yes, the English love New York.)

Okay, but everybody ends up at “Guys and Dolls”? How does THAT happens? And one of the guys said, “Well, it’s ‘Guys and Dolls’, innit?”

I know what he means! :-)

the production was amazing and lauren has a great singing voice. i was lucky enough to meet her after the performance and she let us take pictures & signed autographs. she really is so nice and funny. r.i.p. lorelai

Some actors were a bit stiff and the director made an announcement before the show started that they were still in previews. However, Lauren was a pleasant surprise. Her voice was clear and strong. She needs to keep her NY accent a little more consistent but, other than that, she did a great job.
