Lauren Graham Talks “Parenthood,” Will Be on “Ellen” Next Week

Lauren Graham talked to Michael Ausiello about her decision to join the cast of Parenthood after Maura Tierney was forced to drop out due to medical reasons.  Lauren will be portraying Sarah, a single mom in a large family, and I think she’s a perfect replacement for Tierney.  Drama Desk Awards New York

When asked how she felt about returning to TV, she explained that she has enjoyed making movies and being on Broadway and that it’s “hard to think about giving up.”

She explained, however, that the script for Parenthood was the “best thing” she’s read and that becoming part of the cast was something that she instinctually wanted to do.

As you know, her Gilmore Girls character, Lorelai, was a single mother but fans shouldn’t expect to see more of the same from Lauren on this new series.  She explains: “She’s a woman. She probably wears jeans. [Laughs]. She’s a single mom, yes, but I don’t think the tone of the show is the same. The sound of Gilmore Girls, that voice, is so unique to Amy [Sherman-Palladino]. This show has its own voice. It’s a grown-up show, too. It doesn’t have some of the more whimsical elements of [Gilmore Girls]. It’s more realistic.”

Since the role was originally intended for Maura Tierney, Ausiello asked Lauren if Sarah’s character was being altered after the casting change.  She said that she’s been asked for her input and is “interested in the flawed part of her” since people have come up to her and said “I wish my mom was just like Lorelai. That’s not this character. She’s not perfect. She’s funny and smart and she’s doing a pretty good job, but she’s struggling, and that’s what I’m drawn to. In my experience, it’s the less noble parts of someone that are the most interesting, especially over a long story.”

I don’t know about you but I’m really looking forward to seeing Lauren as Sarah, especially now that she has revealed how different the character is from Lorelai.  I’m glad for that as well since no role could ever come close to being as good as that one so it’s great that Lauren is getting a chance to work in a whole new direction.

Lauren will also be appearing on Ellen on October 20, 2009 as one of the show’s favorite episodes from the past.  I always find her talk show interviews hilarious so I’ll definitely be tuning in!

I am tickled about Lauren Graham’s new role. I am unsure if I will be watching her in parenthood because I don’t want it to mess up my image of her in gilmore girls. I know that sounds stupid, but I can’t help it. I think I will give it a try but I’m not making any promises.
