Lions For Lambs
,a movie in which Tom Cruise stars in, was released on DVD April 8th. Here’s a description of the movie from Amazon.com:
Robert Redford, Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep deliver “three knockout performances” (Vue Weekly) in this powerful story about how the decision makers at the top affect American soldiers on the ground half a world away. An idealistic professor (Redford), a charismatic U.S. Senator (Cruise) and a probing TV journalist (Streep) have opposing viewpoints about the actions of our nation and the attitudes of its citizens. But the human consequences of war become chillingly clear for two of the professor’s former students, who find themselves trapped behind enemy lines, fighting for freedom… and their very lives.
The reviews are very mixed when it comes to this movie. It seems people either love it or hate it. I haven’t seen it, so I have no review of my own to offer.
I watched the trailer again and it looks intense and like a movie I would really enjoy. My favorite line from the movie trailer is, “Says the man from the air conditioned room.” Love that.
Have you seen it? If so, what did you think?

I think that movie had so much potential and fell short, but the acting was good. I think Matthew Michael Carnahan( the writer) needed to bring more depth to the plot and I did not learn anything, where kids in College that viewed the film explained they learned a lot. Well that pretty much sums it up. I have not been in College in over 15 years, so for me not so much.
But I think Tom saw an opportunity to act with Redford and Streep…and who wouldnt jump on that. And for some, it may be a good video to rent.
Just curious what would “kids in College” learn from a fictional story?
Unless of course you mean that those in film school have learned from this movie. But then again film students learn from ALL movies, even the good ones!
I loved it, even though I am a pretty big Cruise movie fan, I am very stingy with my money, so I was getting iffy about going to see after reading what the critics had to say, but I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the movie. I was expecting it to suck, and it really didn’t at all. It was a great movie. I almost cried 3 times. The scenes with the soldiers were the most moving to me. Man, just talking about it makes me want to see it again. I want to look at all the extras. I had no clue it was out already until yesterday. You know, for any of you guys planning on buying the DVD, Target is the place to go. They offer better prices. I swear, you willl get the DVD at a better price if you go to target instead of Blockbuster. I can’t wait to get it, but that will probably be tommorow.
Puck: You are correct, and I didnt clarify. Robert Redford took the film around to Colleges and got responses like, ‘we learned so much about political and media dynamics, and the film really made us think.’ Yes fictional, but with a basis of realistic undertones. He didnt say whether they were film students or not, so I am not sure about that. But I do see your point. So when I viewed it( it was at a screening), I had higher expectations and expected to ‘learn’ something. The writer, Mr. Carnahan also explained he wanted a similar reaction of thinking and learning. But I completely agree with Tuna about the army scenes. I could have watched an entire movie just based upon that time period alone. I thought those segments were very well done.
I love Tom too, and hope the DVD has huge success. …Just my honest opinion about viewing the film.
Thanks for the DVD info Julie. I missed it in the cinema because of its subject matter. The whole war on terror stuff is pretty depressing. Being a huge Tom Cruise fan, I am going to get myself the DVD. He got rave reviews for his performance as senator and am looking forward to seeing this.
Those of you who said you would be buying it admitted one thing: Your bias towards Cruise. That still does not mean it is a great movie. I have a feeling anything with TC would be perfect and great, regardless of the reality. You are entitled to that opinion.
I, for one, still have no desire to see it. The plot doesn’t interest me. I am more interested in the plot the actors.
