BuddyTV has put together another list that references Gilmore Girls, though this time their list is better ordered than the Coolest TV Dads one! The post outlines “Five Great Moments in TV Karaoke” and references, as of course it must, Lorelai’s performance on Gilmore Girls.
- "I Will Always Love You," Gilmore Girls
- "One Way or Another," Veronica Mars
- "Bust a Move," One Tree Hill
- "Don’t Stop Believin’," Family Guy
- "Afternoon Delight," Arrested Development
As the article notes, it’s a “heartbreaking performance” by Lauren Graham that should have been Emmy-worthy. Though Lorelai begins by singing the song for Rory, when Luke comes in… everything changes, and the lyrics take on a whole new meaning as she tries to get through finishing her song. As the article concludes:
“Tell me it isn’t some of the best acting you’ve ever seen… It’s great vocally and one-of-a-kind emotionally, making it not only TV’s greatest karaoke moments, but one of the best scenes on television in the past 20 years.”
Here is Lorelai singing “I Will Always Love You” on Gilmore Girls:
Thanks Ingrid!

I loved it she did a great job. When I first heard her sing I was amazed. I didn’t know she could sing. And the way see looked Luke in the eyes and kept singing i would be laughing or looking at the floor. But singing that song is a tear jerker love her voice.
I think her powerful delivery and dynamic vocals in this 3 minute song is what gave the producers the confidence to go against type and to consider casting her on Broadway in “Guys and Dolls”. Award winning moment for sure!!
That part always make me cry like a baby. I wanted Luke to grab her right then and makeup. Argh!
I just wished they had not ruined that beautiful moment by having Luke who hears Lorelai say: “That didn’t mean anything”. She couldn’t have said anything else to the two gossip girls in town, Babette and Miss Patty!
It’s one of my favourite scenes from Season 7, but it’s definitely not worthy of being called one of the greatest scenes on television in the past 20 years.
Wow – who knew she had it in her. That girl can sing!
Wow! Beautiful! I think this is the best scene ever. I am a great fan of GG.
