Yahoo’s TV Blog has put together a listing of the “Worst TV Breakups EVER“, listing the breaking between Lorelai and Luke right in there. Which breakup, you ask? Why, the one where Lorelai dumps Luke, of course. That one was far more painful to watch.

- Deanna lets Jason get down on one knee to propose (The Bachelorette)
- Michael dumps Holly on The Office
- Kevin and Winnie call it quits on The Wonder years
- Joey and Pacey melt down on Dawson’s Creek
- Mike leaves Gloria on Gloria
- Diane postpones her wedding to Sam on Cheers
- Rhoda and Joe split on Rhoda
- Lorelai breaks Luke’s heart on Gilmore Girls
- Berger breaks up with Carrie on a Post-It note on Sex and the City
- Burke leaves Christina at the altar on Grey’s Anatomy
In terms of the timeline of things, Luke & Lorelai always had a rocky relationship. After getting together in ‘Written in the Stars‘ for their first date, Luke decided the drama with Christopher was too much for him in ‘Say Something‘, and left (so much for the “all in”, hey?). It was a couple of episodes before the couple got back together in ‘So… Good Talk.’ It all seems to go well, with Luke & Lorelai getting engaged, but then Luke slows things down once April arrives. It hurts Lorelai so much that she ends up leaving Luke and jumping into bed with Christopher – bad decision, yes. It put a much more solid stop to their relationship, one that only resolves in the series finale.
As Yahoo notes, “we never got to live out our fantasy of walking down the aisle with Lorelai and Luke. We’re not sure who was more broken-hearted: Lorelai, Luke, or the fans.”

awe. I don’t like that all the blame was placed on Lorelai here for breaking Luke’s heart. He had been breaking hers for months. But, yes, this was a bad break-up. I am, however, OK with the fact that we never got to see them get married. I like that the show ended leaving viewers to imagine the outcome.

I agree with Amy about it not being entirely Lorelai’s fault, Luke had been even more closed then normal prior to this. However I disagree about not needing the wedding, personally I would love to have seen them at least move in together.

What the writers did with Luke and Lorelai was the stupidest thing ever!
They had the most amazing relationship ever portrayed on TV, first as friends and then as lovers. They never got boring or all mushy.
That’s why their second breakup is a total non sense.
Yes Luke had been a jerk but Lorelai made some mistakes. She keeps her mouth shut for months, avoids Luke in the end but she drops the elopement bomb out of the blue, walks away and ends up in somebody else’s bed!
That was completely out of character because it was not like Lorelai to hurt someone, especially Luke, on purpose.
So regarding the breakup I blame them both but mostly I blame the writers because the French elopement was a very crazy idea.
They should have let Luke and Lorelai heal and eventually work things out without involving Mister never not stupid.
I’m still bitter about the way the show ended and I don’t think it will ever go away, unless we miraculously get a TV movie…

Hi Mac
Not sure if I totally agree with you. Yes Lorelai is not the sort to delibertly hurt anyone however common sence and normal Lorelai do seem to go flying out the window when christopher is involved. I think Chris is selfish when she turns up at his door upset saying she doesn’t want to be alone. He should have helped her sort out her problems (like she has done for him when helping to look after Gigi etc) rather than jumping into bed with her when she is vunerable.

Suzi,
I can do nothing but agree with you: once again Chris screws everything up and is just being selfish.
He always comes first et never thinks about helping Lorelai like she always did for him, and his extended family.
From the very first episode he appeared on I never liked him and my feelings only grew worse about him…
