Macy's and Martha Stewart Bring You The Holidays

martha stewart

Oooh, Martha Stewart and Macy’s are teaming up for the holidays! I consider both to be slightly over-the-top when it comes to holiday stuff (love both of them, though) so I can only imagine how this is going to turn out! Here’s the info:

Martha Stewart will design ornaments and light the Great Tree this holiday season at Macy’s on State Street as part of the retailer’s 100th anniversary celebration of the Great Tree, the Walnut Room, the Tiffany ceiling and the Great Clock.

Macy’s already is setting up displays in the store of the domestic diva’s exclusive line of bed, bath, entertaining and cooking products, described as more extensive and higher-quality than her products at Kmart.

“We will have the largest lifestyle gallery of the Martha Stewart Collection, and it launches here [at Macy's on State Street] first,” Macy’s North spokeswoman Jennifer McNamara said during a presentation for the media Thursday.

Last year’s Holiday Tree Tradition in the Walnut Room at Macy’s on State Street had ornaments designed by Vera Wang.

The Martha Stewart gallery on Macy’s main floor opens Aug. 13. Her merchandise also will be displayed throughout the store.

Stewart will use as inspiration for the ornaments German kugels, or balls, that first adorned the tree in the mid-1800s, and she will light the Great Tree at noon on Nov. 10.

Michelle Mesenburg, divisional vice president of events and public relations for Macy’s North, outlined these other new entries and appearances at State Street:

• • Actress Gwyneth Paltrow will make her only appearance at a department store on Aug. 17 to introduce Estee Lauder’s Pleasures Delight fragrance.

• • Carol’s Daughter, a natural wellness, hair and skin-care line that has received the backing of investor celebrities Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith and Jay-Z, is new in the cosmetics department.

• • A lounge will open in August on the third floor for shoppers with Macy’s Platinum and Elite status.

• • The Glamorama fashion show will turn country chic Aug. 24 with singers Big & Rich (Lost in This Moment), Gretchen Wilson (Redneck Woman) and Cowboy Troy (known for hick-hop rather than hip-hop).

• • Macy’s will open a fashion incubator in October, where six aspiring local designers who win a one-year residence may sew and start sourcing their goods.

• • A “Stylista” service — a personal shopper without appointment — starts in early fall, enabling shoppers in a hurry to get quick help finding outfits.

Macy’s also has started publishing its own magazine, called M, to provide men and women with fashion tips, the latest in style news and examples of trends displayed in a wide array of merchandise.

The first issue will launch in September with 124 pages, and will be mailed to Macy’s 500,000 best customers. Another 250,000 copies will be available in Macy’s stores, airport lounges and other highly trafficked areas.

The positive events contrasted with some sobering news this week: pay cuts for senior salespeople, a fruit-fly infestation (cleaned up by Thursday) in a lower-level restaurant, the announced January closing of the Macy’s store in Lake Forest, a man jumping to his death inside the State Street store and a shooting outside the River Oaks mall in Calumet City.
