Instead of opening with a performance, this year’s MTV Video Music Awards opened with Madonna paying tribute to the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson. I thought that it was going to be some 30-second speech which would be followed by video montage of his life and greatest video moments but, instead, the singer first drew parallels between her life and Jackson’s, talked about the time they spent together and then talks about how she feels the world let him down by embarking on a witch hunt and failing to treat him like a human being.
The crowd erupted in cheers, many shed some tears and the tribute led some to rise from their seats. It was an emotional speech and I could never recapture her words so it’s best if you just watch it if you missed it (or just want to see it again):
