I’ve got some really, really bad news for you guys.

According to a couple of different sources, the following is happening with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince:
- The only scene Natalia Tena (Tonks) has filmed for the movie, isn’t actually in the book at all.
- She was only on set for the part where Death Eaters attack the Burrow at Christmas (where Harry & the Weasleys are present).
- She said that none of the angst of her character is there – indeed, she and Lupin are just suddenly a couple when they meet there.
Oh, but that’s not the worst of it (although that is bad enough). No. This is the worst of it.
THEY HAVE CUT DUMBLEDORE’S FUNERAL.
What. The. Hell. Is. Wrong. With. These. People. That scene is CRUCIAL to the series. What, are we just going to cut away from his broken body and go on our merry way? Plus, Remus got majorly shafted in the books themselves (not to mention Tonks) and now obviously the movies are just making sure we really get it.
Does JK Rowling really approve of this? Honestly, how crappy is this movie going to be without the closure of Dumbledore’s funeral?!?!?!?!?

hard to accept, but it’s a film, it has 2 hours or so to tell the same story the book does. I trust they will find a way to work the crucial information/emotion that the funeral gave us into other scenes and basically compress it in a way in which the ending still works. That is the script writer’s job after all. I am sad about Tonks and Remus being cut so much, but like I said, it’s a film, it only has little time to tell the story compared to the book.
But maybe it helps to keep in mind that a film has something the book doesn’t have, which is visual story telling. Hopefully it will be done well so that a lot can be told via the visuals and we are not ACTUALLY loosing much of the essential.
momo, my buddy!!! how are you chum? i havent heard from you in a while.
i know this sounds kinda creepy, but i kinda agree with you. now normally, i would have said the opposite of what you said, just to annoy you, but i have to agree with you on this issue. i actuall heard a rumor earlier about dumbeldore’s funeral being cut, and i was kind of okay with it. keep in mind, i love dumbledore and he was one of my favorite adults in HP, but i was wondering how they could show this, and all the emotion would be hard to catch on camera. my only question now is (since i am a die hard h/g shipper), when and where is harry gonna tell ginny they cant be together, or will they even have harry break up with ginny at all in the film?????? hmmm…..
im thinking they wont “break up” at all, b/c it would just confuse all the people in the theater who dont actually read the books (the losers). and also b/c they have a nice little makeout session on harry’s birthday, and that would just confuse them even more. so…
vive xe
ooh, and im a little dissapointed about tonks, but i so knew it was gonna happen. she is like THE coolest adult character, but she kind of has her own plot, different than harry’s.
but if tonks is only in the burrow scene, who is going to rescue harry after draco attacks him on the train. harry would still be on the hogwarts express all these years later under his invisibility cloak if tonks hadnt saved him. wonder whos going to save him in the movie. maybe snape…
vive xe
ughhh why do they have to do this?!?! i understand that it’s a movie and they have to compress stuff but THIS IS A CRUCIAL SCENE! first of all, the saying goodbye and stuff of dumbledore (what are they gonna do for the last movie w/ the wand and stuff and his tomb? secondly, the h/g thing– they HAVE to break up– its inevitable- they can’t be together for the last for it to follow the story line (not like the script writer cares)– also i <3 tonks!! she totally got jipped in the 5th– when she dies in the last movie people are not gonna care like i did when i read the book
lupin has been totally taken out and so has tonks– it’ll just be random in the 7th– suddenly they’re together and have a kid– what’s next- will they not include teddy? this is idiotic
the writers really need to stick to the book or the movies are gonna suck– although i still love the movies they keep deviating more and more from the book and i’m starting to like them less and less. hopefully this is just a rumor (fingers crossed)

OMGG
NOO
STUIPED IDIOTS!
That is sad that they have to cut that scene out it was a very main important part in the book! But it is hard to put the Whole book in a 2 hr. movie…so from that point i understand them!
What Daetheater attack scene occurs at the Burrow in Half Blood Prince over Christmas?
In Half Blood Prince, Percy and Scrimjaw show up during Christmas!!!!!!!!!
Deatheaters don’t show up Draco is able to get them in Hogwarts!!!!
I don’t understand why they feel the need to limit the length of these movies. Some of the top grossing pictures of ALL TIME are 3 hours plus!!!!
If it is good movie people won’t notice how long it is!
yo, kevin, keep up with the times!!!! they announced weeks ago that they were gonna add a scene in HBP. harrys over for christmas and bellatrix and greyback attack the burrow. they did this with Jo’s blessing b/c they said that they wanted us to know that the wizarding world isnt safe. jo makes that clear as the books go on, but this scene just kinda tells you that nothing is safe to your face.
actually, the script for that scene leaked online. not that they were saying much besides, “look out” and a couple of random spells and some “harry!!!”s thrown in for good measure.
Lately it seems like JkR only cares about money. Where’s the integrity of the books? They should just make the film longer instead of cutting it.
Every single “change” that has been made for the movies has not resulted in a better movie.
The most offensive of these were:
1. in Prizoner of Azkaban:
The Petronis NOT being a Giant stag and charging down the Dementors (also Order of the Phoenix) The “bombarda spell” Hermione used to free Sirius, not taking about 1 minute at the end when Lupin gives Harry the marauders map back and telling him his father helped create it
Harry: Professor, how is it you know how to use the map?
Lupin: Why I’m Moony, Sirius is Padfoot, Peter was Wormtail and your father was Prongs
2. in Goblet of Fire, Harry vs Dragon (movie version has the dragon dying, not nearly as suspenceful as the book where he has to tease the dragon into moving and then just barely getting to the egg without serious injury), Harry in the lake (the silly “ascendium spell” to get him out of the water) and the “magic shrubs” in the maze (how unbelievably BORING!!!!!!!!!), THE COMPLETE LACK OF SCORING FOR THE TASKS, Voldemort resurrection scene (that seemed to last only 5 minutes and had Fienes rushing thru his lines as if he was for something)
3. in order of the Phoenix: replacing the Creevy brothers with the “whatever the the character’s name is”, replacing Doby’s significant impact on Harry with Neville ( THE death in Deathly Hallows that impacts Harry the most )
and “bombarda maxima” used by Umbridge to magically blast open the door of the room of requirement …
I could go on but I hope my point is well taken.
JKR gave us an “flavorful story” and the movies turned it into an imitation vanilla outline.
It just irks me that when the books where released the first thing the movie producers did was discuss what parts of the books will be cut!
How about trying to convert the book to a screenplay first then edit to make the movie and just like Lord of the Rings release a “special edition with hours of extra footage”
Oh but by all means continue to waste 15 – 30 minutes on the end credits and then have the balls to include that in the length of the films!!!!
[...] that will be Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. So far, they’ve cut quite a lot: Dumbledore’s funeral (grrrrr), Moaning Myrtle, Tonks and Lupin, and Katie [...]
while all of you have good points, you have to realize that they DON’T have to put the book into a 2 hour movie. they could go to 2 1/2, 3, or even more hours. these last two movies are the ones that are going to bring the Harry Potter story to an end, and the writers, director, producer, and even JK Rowling have to see that without all these crucial scenes in the movies, the ending of the series will not make sense. i sincerely hope someone makes some type of action to put these scenes into the movies, because they need to be there. if not, i know i will be one of many millions of disappointed fans.
So make the movie longer, and stop screwing up the story! People don’t have a problem with the length of the Lord of the Rings movies; they won’t have a problem with Harry Potter being a 3 hour movie. They botched up 5 so bad that it’s frightening! PLEASE don’t make the same mistakes in 6. The fans know the story, and they’re going to want to see the key parts included (how many people who didn’t read the books know ANYTHING about Neville’s involvement with the Prophecy?)
WTF??????? what have they done???? at this rate, the half blood prince movie is going to be just as bad as the order of the phoenix movie……and we all remember how bad that one was.
Dumbledores funeral is a crucial point in the book. it sets the tone of the deathly hallows, ita when harry realizes just how hard it will be, and its also when he tells ginny they cant be together. Are they just going to take all that out too?
They simply cant make movie number 6 a 2,5 hour movie. They simply cant. Have to be atleast 3h movie.
I’m really scared about movie number 7. I know they are going to make two movies. But still. Some how I just know that they will ruin it.
And one last thing:
Michael Gambon as Dumbledore!?? OMG.
He cant play that role at all. In the books Dumbledore are old, but have a strong glow about him. He is always calm.
MG is none of thise things. F.eks. In GOF, after harry has becomed the 4. contester, Dumbledore almost attack him, pushing him back into the table. He is filled with panic and is NOT calm.
I was really sad when Richard Harris died. He was the perfekt Dumbledore.
Peace to your all
They honestly can’t do this! On “Wiki” under the profile for Nymphadora Tonks there was a picture from the 6th movie of her, Lupin, and Mr. and Mrs. Weasley. The description for the picture was “during the attack on the burrow”. What the F**K!!!!! Her hair was brown too. If her and Lupin were a couple like it’s rumored she wouldn’t have brown hair like in the picture cause she wouldn’t be depressed.
Another thing is that on youtube i saw an interviewish type thing where Natalia Tena said that they were truely cutting out Dumbledore’s funeral, so that has been confirmed as true unless they change the script. That right there just messes everything! That’s also where Harry breaks up with Ginny because he thinks Voldemort will try to target her. So as you can see, this movie will be so messed up!!!!!!!!!!
You know I find it insulting what Warner Bros is doing to the harry potter story. The first two movies were great, and you can tell the script and production were done by true fans of the story. The third took liberties in the story line (changing the scene where Harry recieves the Firebolt from christmas to the end of the movie), but it still was a good movie. The fourth and fifth, however, are just insulting. I am not putting down the actors who work hard, but hte script writers, who seem more concerned on what they deem is “not important” being cut from the film and moving things around for what they think is “dramatic”. In reality they have created loopholes, forsaken the personalities of characters, and seemingly have not bothered to talk to Rowling about how to work the story to make sense in future ones. The “attack on the burrow” is an excellent example.
((SPOILER ALERT. Anyone who has not read the Half-Blood Prince or The Deathly Hallows Please avert your eyes))
For the sake of suspense, they have diminished the future attack of the Death Eaters at Fleur and Bills Wedding, one of my favorite chapters (Nothing like hearing that the ministry has been taken over by the villian in the first quarter to make you want to read through the night.) Anything they put in the next one, which I am sure will have harry fighting off 20 death eaters, what with the way the scripts have butchered the story so far, will be something already done.
As for letting Tonks and Remus fall in love right away is an insult to the characters. Lupin hates what he is and resists getting close to anyone, (save Harry, to which he sees as James Potter, I think) fearing that he may kill or infect them. Tonks loves him more than anything and is willing to risk her own life for him and while being depressed and sullen about being rejected, she never stops loving him and keeps trying to be with him. This scene cheapen both of the characters, their tender moment in the hospital wing, and the scene where Lupin runs out on a pregnant Tonks in Deathly Hallows.
As for the funeral, I hate to say it, as it is one scene I really want to see in the movie, but it’s not nessecary. The only things in that scene that are important to the plot is Harry deciding not to come back to hogwarts and, to a lesser extent, protecting Ginny by breaking up with her. These points can be made without having to make or hire several hundred characters to sit in chairs. I think it would be a very nice, but everything you need can be done with Harry standing at Dumbledores tomb with hogwarts in the background.
I love the books, and I understand that some things just need to be cut. However, we know that cuts and changes can be made that do not destroy the characters and the essence of the story. Anyone who has seen Lord of the Rings knows that when you have people who really understand and care about what they are creating, the fans will accept them, even like the new scenes.
On a final thought, I would like to say something to Warner Bros. You don’t have to limit a script into two hours worth of film. The best films, LOTR, The Godfather, and even the Sorcerers Stone, were nearly three hours long or more. If you are loyal to the fans, we will pay to see them again and again. If you choose to try and gut a story we have come to love and cherish, then we will not. We are your income, and if you think we will give you that money just because you have “Harry Potter” in the title, remember the profits from Ghostbusters 2.
~Nathios~
Ahem, I know I said my final note was to Warner’s but I hadn’t noticed two posts with some interesting thoughts that I wanted to comment on.
Taylor said the scene was to show that the wizarding world isn’t safe, that’s there way of justifying it. As the new trailer shows, there are scenes of mass destruction in the muggle world (I was very impressed at that moment, seeing a massive bridge collapse and buildings destroyed in a Death eaters wake, even though they can seemingly fly around without brooms), they could have easily shown the fear in diagon alley, the once bright place from the books to what it is in HBP. Truth is they wanted to spice up the movie with more bangs and smoke, thinking that is what we really want to see (Star Wars made the same mistake with the Prequels). I can imagine they feel that putting Harry in danger then would be better than having scenes where they find out about a child trying to murder his grandparents from the Prophet or on the radio.
Apple22 brought up a valid point, but I think she doesn’t care about the movies rather than care about the money. First off, she has stated that she will not be writing anything more to do with Harry Potter, save a encyclopedia for charity. She could easily make much more money churning out the adventures of Harry’s children or what happened in the years after Hogwarts.
Secondly, while there is an section of Universal Studios being built into Harry Potter amusement park (something many believe is proof she is trying to milk the books for all their worth), she refused to let Universal have those rights unless they went with her ideas for the park (Which is actually pretty awesome, check out the official page and see the concept design). Again, if she only cared about the money, she would have haggled for money instead, and we probably would have gotten the Dobby Teacups and Voldemorts wild Ride.
In any case, I think she may not be as involved in the script writing process as we believe, because she would be credit with the screenplay as well as the novel. Personally I would rather see her say she was dissapointed with certain aspects, but then again, she may feel she has to support the film to support the story she has worked on for years
this is disappointing.
[...] don’t get the whole Irish wake thing, and I thought that Dumbledore’s funeral was cancelled, filming-wise? Maybe they decided to add it back [...]
David Yates is an idiot. He ruined 5 and now he’s ruined 6.
The trailers make it appear that the whole movie centres around Romilda Vane.
What the hell?
Why can’t they just cut some of Romilda’s scenes and replace it with the stuff that is actually important – stuff that actually has a significance in DH? It’s just … stupid.
Just to recap, DAVID YATES IS A COMPLETE IDIOT.
1) Having just finished HBP, I’m unsurprised that the romantic aspects of Lupin and Tonks have been cut. They weren’t central to the main plot, and really this doesn’t affect me at all. Tonks wasn’t really in the last movie, anyway, so to just suddenly make it a huge aspect doesn’t really make any sense. That’s such a minor detail.
2) You all say that HP movies could be made into 3, 3.5 hour movies just like LOTR, but I’m sorry to say that this would never work because the main audiences for the two movies are very different. HP caters to the 7-?? crowd, while LOTR was more for the teenage and up crowd. WB knows this. They’re not stupid. No parent is going to bring their 7 year old to a three and a half hour movie about wizards. Or anything, up to and including The Wiggles. The kids won’t sit through it, and, to be honest, I have no desire to sit in a theater with those kids once we hit hour three. It’ll be a nightmare.
3) The fact that Tonks wasn’t really in the last movie is a small point of a much larger issue: at this point, you all need to realize that the Harry Potter book series and the Harry Potter movie series are two different entities. Consider the movies AU plots if it helps you sleep at night, but the fact of the matter is that while the books feed the movies, the movies do not have to reflect the books at all. We’re probably lucky that they reflect what they do to the extent that they do. Once upon a time, this wasn’t so, but now it most obviously is.
While I am annoyed that the funeral has been cut, they might have done it because they were not able, in the end, to recreate it with the care and scale that JKR wrote it. Think about it–how many creatures were represented? How many people in general? How many students, extras, everything would have been required to re-create that scene? It’s almost impossible. So, instead of doing her a disservice, they decided to remove it.
Hopefully they will start the 1st part of the 7th movie with Dumbledore’s funeral…
