Malaysian Group Set to Protest Outside Avril Lavigne's Concert

2008 Juno Awards - Show

Avril Lavigne’s big concert in Malaysia is tomorrow night (Aug 29) and despite getting approval from the government after Islamic protests tried to have her banned, the show will still go on!  However, the Pan Malaysian Islamic Party PAS has said that they will continue to protest, this time outside the venue before it starts.

“A concert of this nature is not conducive to teach the younger generation to become good citizens, upright and competitive, but instead would weaken them morally and mentally,” Nasrudin Hassan of the pan Malaysian Islamic Party PAS said in a statement.  “If the concert organisers do not heed this warning to cancel the concert, PAS youth will order all Muslim youth to turn up and protest the concert in order to prevent it from taking place.”

The Malaysian government has allowed the concert to take place on the condition that it was “not a bad influence, especially on the young.”

Now all you Malaysian Avril fans MUST leave a comment and tell us what’s going on over there!!

I respect a country’s culture, of course, but Avril hasn’t even performed yet. They don’t know if she’s going to tone it down or not… *sigh*

I do hope that everything goes well. It’s unfortunate that this sort of mindset is still prevalent in some areas of the world. John Stuart Mill puts my point perfectly in “On Liberty”, wherein he writes that, “The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over an individual member of a civilized community, against his(her) will, is to prevent harm to others. His(her) own good, either physical or moral, is not a sufficient warrant.” Surely Avril’s concerts are not harming anyone, and even if it were true (which it is NOT) that her concerts were morally suspect, it should be up to the citizens to decide for themselves whether they want to attend or turn away.

P.S.–It might even be argued that Avril Lavigne’s success and her actively fostering her natural talents are morally commendable and offer a paradigm example of the virtues of hard work, persistence, and charity. Avril had the courage to leave her home at a young age so that she could follow her dream, and it definitely was not without risk. She’s doing what she loves and she can share her talent and passions with fans who reciprocate their appreciation for her music and her movies. Instead of trying to look for the faults in people who can (and perhaps should be) admired, we should give them the credit which is due to them, and glean what important lessons that we can. Avril Rocks!

OMG! The concert was awesome! My friend and I were kinda having our own show with our nonstop singalong. I didn’t see anyone protesting outside the venue though. Maybe they were tempted by the Avril’s posters outside the venue and decided to get tickets for themselves. Hehe… Avril was soo soo cute! She had a total of 4 outfits if I’m not mistaken. The last one was the cutest. She wore a red hoodie with small kitty ears. I’m proud to say that I have now lost my voice =)

yeah!! wth. Okay, so they protested. I was inside the stadium already when they were protesting I guess. Too bad. According to the news here, they distributed some flyers to the crowd outside the stadium. God knows what’s on the flyers. Who cares. And yea. The moment Avril stepped out, I started singing along till the end of the concert. The first thing I looked for after the concert was a freakin’ mineral water! haha.
