Tonight, the HBO original movie Grey Gardens will premiere. Grey Gardens is the dramatization of the lives of Edith Ewing Bouvier & her daughter Edith Bouvier Beale (known as “Big Edie” and “Little Edie”), the aunt and cousin of Jackie Kennedy Onasis, who were once very active in the 1930s New York social scene. The film costars Drew Barrymore as little Edie and Jessica Lange and Big Edie and so far is getting a lot of buzz.

They lived in an estate in East Hampton (known as Grey Gardens) in increasing poverty and squalor. A 1975 documentary, also known as Grey Gardens, looked at their day-to-day life of idiosyncrasies, singing, dancing, fighting and making up.
Mary-Kate Olsen was the October 2007 cover girl for Harper’s Bazaar. Her fashion editoral inside the magazine, costarring Lauren Hutton, was inspired by the Edies and their life at their deprecit mansion, Grey Gardens.
The Edies are beloved in the fashion community and are often used as inspirations for collections, photo shoots and more. Spreads in both Vogue and Bust have depicted the Beales’ lives and fashion choices. Marc Jacobs even named a Spring 2007 bag “Little Edie” in honor of the younger Edie.
I’m excited to watch Grey Gardens tonight, as it will introduce these two bizarre but fascinating women to a much bigger audience. HBO will also be airing the original 1975 documentary that inspired the fascination surrounding these women, which is also worth watching.
The look book, starring Mary-Kate Olsen as Little Edie and Lauren Hutton as Big Edie, is still available online to view, which you can do so here.
