So, how many of you watched Mary Winkler on today’s Oprah? She’s the woman who killed her pastor husband, grabbed their three kids and disappeared for a few days. She served 7 months, I believe, in a mental institution and today, she got to be interviewed by Oprah.
Well, let me start by saying that, as much as I like Oprah, she really ticks me off sometimes. She is so passive and helpful to some guests (like the girl who killed her baby after hiding her pregnancy – “you know, I hid a pregnancy too when I was a teenager and gave birth to a stillborn child” – whatever) and then she doesn’t “get” the actions of other people. Hmmm… she understands a teen killing the baby she and her boyfriend hid from everyone but is baffled that a woman shot her husband in the back? I have no idea about Mary’s guilt or innocence but I’m just asking for a little consistency here?
Like, when Mary said that her husband may not have wanted to kill their baby when she was crying but wanted her to “go back to sleep” – Oprah was like “I don’t get that and no one listening to this gets it.” Speak for yourself, Oprah. It’s like those parents who have children die from shaken baby syndrome. They may not have wanted to kill the baby but they did want the baby to stop crying. Is it right? No! Can someone who has actually been a parent understand (though not condone) what happened? Yes! Maybe’s it’s because Oprah never had children. But I digress…
What did you think of Mary? She’s an odd one, I must say. I think she probably remembers more than she says and I think it is also possible that she loaded the gun the night before (no one mentioned that, though). However, Oprah might not find prostitute looking shoes demeaning but I can understand why the Southern wife of a preacher would. I’m no longer religious but I grew up and lived some of my adult life affiliated with a church and I can understand her problem even if I wouldn’t be that bothered by it.
I can’t say what I think about this story. There’s not enough that I know about for me to make a decision.
Do you have an opinion about what happened to Mary and Matthew Winkler?
