Matt Giraud Elimination – The Day After

Once the competition gets to the Top 5, American Idol gets pretty intense.  Assumedly, contestants make it that far because they have a big enough fan base so, no matter who goes home, a lot of people are going to be very sad.

Last night, Matt Giraud was sent home and I actually was pretty okay with that.  What shocked me, however, was the fact that Adam Lambert was in the bottom two.  I still can’t wrap my head around that one and it’s one of those situations where I have a hard time believing America’s votes counted.

On American Idol Extra last night, music director, Rickey Minor, shared his theory on why Matt was eliminated: "I think he thought himself out of the competition.  He over-thought what he was going to do, how he was going to hold his hand, how he was going to sing. When you do that, it’s not a natural thing.  As in basketball, you’ve got to let your shot come to you.  Don’t force it. If the ball doesn’t go in the basket, it’s still no points, so what’s the point of doing the razzle-dazzle? If you feel it, if you feel an opening, take it. But I think Matt didn’t feel it, and it was more calculated than it needed to be."

I can see what Minor meant.  Matt did sometimes seem mechanical, except when he was at the piano.  He didn’t just let the performance roll, he had too much control (although, I would have liked him better if he had actually had *more* control over his runs but that’s another issue).

There are a good number of post-elimination interviews with Matt floating around the internet but here’s one (check out some more on MJs Big Blog):

Adam at the bottom,, Well, he has been more of a Broadway Theatrical performer than an all around artist like the others! Grant it, He has a fantastic voice, no doubt but, has he ever sang anything that is not so dramatic. Maybe he should of been on America’s Got Talent then to male American Idol as a Broadway Showman Artist.
He has used his safe zone so many times, I think people are saying enuf all ready, lets hear something with out all of the fanfare of dramatization.

But, we are at the stage where that becomes normal.

The show is about all the different music and not just Broadway-ish.

I was very shocked at Adam being in the bottom 2. I was happy that Danny
And Allison were safe. I guess we just have to accept at this point that
Someone has to go home. This week is tough to predict since its rock week
    They should all do well.

Yeah, this is definitely going to get real from this point in but I was also really shocked about Adam.
