Mischa Barton has been a supporter and ambassador for Save the Children, going to South Africa earlier this year, visiting a poverty-stricken area.
On Mischa’s new website, Mischa describes in a new video her experience in South Africa — visiting a school, helping to feed the children their lunch.
Sadly, many of the children don’t make it through their first year and others not to their fifth birthday due to diseases — even preventable diseases such as pneumonia. A lot of the parents die from HIV/AIDS.
She vividly remembers one kid they took home. His mother, who had HIV, had abandoned him. The relatives all lived in the floor of a room the size of a broom closet, Mischa said.
The trip was life changing for her, especially watching the children’s spirit and joy at simple things like someone playing a game with them.
Mischa mentioned that she’ll be filming in India in the near future and hopes to do charity work there as well.
