Mischa Barton for Save the Children

Mischa Barton became ambassador for Save the Children, and this year went away for several weeks as part of the Rewrite the Future campaign. Several celebrities joined a special board for this campaign, whose aim is to help children in war zones and conflict-affected areas. It helps children gain access to education in a safer environment.

Mischa visited a small poverty-striken area of South Africa outside Johannesburg. The town she visited is called Soweto.

Mischa had this to say:

“I visited a primary school in Soweto, where a lot of the children are orphans and there is a high incidence of AIDS. I helped prepare and serve lunch to the children; it’s just simple maize and for many it’s the only meal they get. We chatted and I took part in their class. They are heartbreakingly beautiful children. I feel so privileged that I could just meet [the children] and hope to make a difference!”

You can see a gallery of photos of Mischa in Soweto here.
