“Sometimes bad guys make the best good guys — we provide the leverage.”
That’s a quote from Academy Award® winner Timothy Hutton’s character Nathan Ford on the new TNT drama Leverage, which will debut with a commercial-free premiere at 10 p.m. ET/PT tonight.
In Leverage, Hutton (Ordinary People, The Good Shepherd) plays former insurance investigator Nate Ford, a once-loyal corporate employee who has recovered millions of dollars in stolen goods for his employer. After the employer denied his son’s insurance claims and allowed the boy to die, Ford realized he could no longer work for the company.
Out of work and unable to get past his grief, Ford is hired by an aeronautics executive (in the pilot episode tonight called “The Nigerian Job”) to recover airplane designs the executive claims were stolen by a rival.
Assembling a highly-trained team: Parker (Beth Riesgraf), an expert thief; Alec Hardison (Aldis Hodge, Friday Night Lights), a specialist in Internet and computer fraud; Eliot Spencer (Christian Kane, Angel), a high-octane “retrieval specialist” who can take out a gang of henchmen without breaking a sweat; and Sophie Devereaux (Gina Bellman, Coupling), a swindler who could win awards for her acting skills during difficult scams.
At first, the new team is hesitant to trust each other because they are used to working alone. But when they are double-crossed, they are forced to unite.
Once they discover they can trust each other, the group targets the richest, greediest and most unjust.
Personally, I’m happy to see Timothy Hutton in a series. Ordinary People is a movie I’ll never forget, and I think he has a lot to bring to the acting table. Being modern day Robin Hoods, as they say, they will use the technology we have now to work against their targets.
I think this show has a lot of potential so it will be interesting to see how well it does in ratings.
Though the show is debuting on Sunday, all new episodes will continue on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT beginning December 9.
